1. The abortive revolt of 29 March 1953 in Salama and Sari Jeronimo was a premature
and poorly planned attempt by a small group which was doomed to failure from the
start, and the leaders of this group have fled Guatemala.
2. This unsuccessful attempt did not involve other stronger and better disciplined
groups, totalling more than 50pOOO men, and has resulted in a tightening of
security measures employed by these other groups.
3. The brutal and inhuman treatment accorded the rebels captured at Salama and
San Jeronimo has served to increase both the overt and covert revulsion and
opposition to the Arbenz regime.
