They are relieved every four hours; the patrols consist of two men, each armed with pistols; one light machine gun is kept in the guards room which is located in the hangars. the center of the city of Olomouc near the Morava River. It lies between the Morava River and the double-track railway line of the Czechoslovak State Railroads Olomouc - Prerov. The airport is approximately 220'meters above. sea level; the prevailing wide are from the northwest, but the region is not too windy. Visibility is bad, especially in the spring and in the fall, during which time the weather is very foggy-owing to the fact that the airport is too close to the river. The temperature is mild, rainfalls normal; the airport ground is very soft in the spring and in the fall owing to the high ground water table. The airport does not have any concrete runways; the surface is covered with grace; the starting runway is 15 meters wide and is marked with red and white signs. Planes always took off and landed to the north or to the south, al- ugh landings were sometimes made in the western direction (260?). During dry weather, the airport is well suited for landing Dakota DC-3's, The ap- proaches to the runways are not marked and there is not control tower for the airport nor any special equipment for night flying. The airport was not found suitable for night flights in view of many obstacles in the neighborhood which are not marked with warning lights. Obstacles within the radius of five kilometers are hills in the western direction (approximately three kilometers from the airport), 50 meters above the level of the airport. In addition to radio towers, there are many high factory chimneys in the vicinity as well as the buildings in the city of Olomouc, Obstacles within the radius of 20 kilometers are hills located about seven kilometers east, of the airport. These hills are 100 meters above the level of the airport. The best dir- eotion for landing is away from the Morava River Valley. The airport does not have any custom duty offices. It is guarded. by the National Security Corps (SNB) which also conduct searches and control of CLASSIFICATION SECRET/SECURITY INFORMATION DISTRIBUTION J T Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr2013/05/13 : CIA-RDP82-00047R000200050005-8 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr2013/05/13 : CIA-RDP82-00047R000200050005-8 SECRET/SECURITY INT't~RMATION The airport has an ambulance with two beds at its disposal.
