National Chungking University fN'C7, founded in the 1920;s, had a World War II student enrollment of about 8,000. In the College of Science there were departments of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and geology. The College of Engineering had departments of archi- tectural chemical metallurgical, and In World Warn,, because of ~tle- war-, a concentration of professors ? in Chungking, our depart- ment was the best in China. However, in normal times neither the NCU mining and metallurgy department nor NCU as a whole ranks with the top-flight Chinese universities. 25X1 25X1 25X1 2. For the first two years, students took the same subjects in the NCU mining and, metallurgy department; in the third year, we began to 'major in either mining or metallurgy. 25X1 sixteen students received BS degrees in t mining and metallurgy department; nine in metallurgy and seven in mining. Several students failed scholastically before reaching the final year, but most of them transferred to other departments, rather than leave the university completely. I believe that the majority 25X1 are still in China, 25X1 CLASSIFICATION CONFIDENTIAL-- I Approved For Release 2003/12/11: CIA-RDP82-00047R000200580008-7 25X1 Approved For R~~ 1 :CIA-RDP82-0004780002 Concentration of University Facilities 3, have " current information on Chinese Universities, Gen re ize i port ant, departments in one university per geographical ,area. For exae, in North China, engineering is centered at Tsinghua University, and agriculture and literature at Peking University. In Central China, engineering is concentrated in Chekiang University. This re-organization seems logical to me, because it makes maximum use of existing facilities by concentrating faculty and equipment of several universities in one locatioii.
