MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director of Central Intelligence
Executive Director
Associate Deputy Director for Intelligence
Deputy Director for Administration
Director of Training and Education
SUBJECT: Recognition for Special Support
1. The U.S. Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia, provides
invaluable support to the Military Analysis Course (MAC)
conducted by the Office of Training and Education for the
Directorate of Intelligence. The Marines have set up special
sessions on organization, weapons, and small unit tactics; and
they have arranged for our students to observe firepower
demonstrations given for Marine officer students. At the last
demonstration, MAC students had the opportunity to fire 105mm
howitzers, something which none of the Marine students did.
2. The willingness of the command at Quantico to provide
this support and to go beyond just meeting the requirement
adds a special element to these courses. It deserves
special recognition.
3. In a discussion with the Course Director about military
analysis training, the Associate Deputy Director for Intelligence
suggested that a letter from the Deputy Director of Central
Intelligence along with an Agency plaque would be an appropriate
acknowledgement of our debt to the Marines. The attached letter
is in response to that suggestion.

Lieutenant General D. M. Twomey
Commanding General
Marine Corps Development and
Education Command
Quantico, Virginia 22134-5050
Dear General Twomey:
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the
outstanding support provided by your Command to our Military
Analysis Courses. Since we began the program in January 1984,
the Amphibious Instruction Department of the Education Center has
arranged for seven visits, involving support from both the Basic
School and the Amphibious Warfare School. The enthusiastic
support of all the Marines gives a dimension to the course that
could not be achieved otherwise, and our analysts are better
equipped to carry out their responsibilities for it.
One of the primary goals of our program is to provide new
analysts with a basic understanding of military organizations and
the complexities associated with ground force operations. The
visits to Quantico make a major contribution to that goal. The
special sessions on organization and equipment and basic tactics,
combined with the firepower demonstrations and informal
discussions, all work together to provide invaluable insight for
our people who are concerned with military problems worldwide.
The Agency plaque that I am sending with this letter is a
token of our gratitude--from one professional organization to
another. Thank you.
Sincerely,
/S/ john N.. McMahon
