1. TJIONG Pek Som* purchased all available stocks of rice produced in Krawang
and Bekasi during April and May 1949. He now has this rice stored in his
godowns in Batavia.
2. On 25 May TJIONG consulted with J.E. van Hoogatraten, of the Department of
Economic Affairs, and on 7 June the rural police, on instructions from the
civil authoritiesbegan to prohibit the transport of paddy and rice from
rrawang to Batavia.
3. The results of this restriction will be:
a. The areas without enough rice, such as Bogor and Meester Cornelis,
will be unable to mill rice.
b. The rice monopoly organization of TJIONG Pek Stmt will
alone be able to purchase and mill rice.
a. The price of rice in Batavia and other nearby areas will rise
and TJIONG will be able to sell his stockrile at a large profit.
In 1945 TJIONG tool' c-.ta all of the rice for distribution in areas
controlled by the Allied Forces and continued to control rice distribution
through 1947 In 1948 he made five million guilders;*half of which went to
van Hoogatraten.

Comment,. December 1948, referred to TJIONG as
"the rice king of Indonesia." It reported that he was a partner of
H.H. Gravels in the Sin T~oen Company. Grovels was reported to be
