Zdravookhranerya Lit. SSR) is located in a four-story building at
No. 27 Prospekt Stalina, at the corner of Komunaro Street, in
Vilnius. The Ministry is composed of the following sections:

2. The Ministry of Health is represented throughout the
republic by Town and District Health Offices. The Town Health
Offices are known as "Gorzdrav" (Gorodskoy Otdel Zdravookhraner{ya).
The District Health Offices, referred to as "Rayzdrav" (Rayonniy
Otdel Zdravookhraneiya), deal with health and sanitation problems
in rural areas. Within their area of competence, these local
institutions supervise dispensaries, hospitals, sanitary stations
and pharmacies. They also oversee health service personnel and
standards of hygiene in general, especially in such institutions
as food factories and children's homes.
3. The Ministry controls the following services in Vilnius:
a. An analytical laboratory located in the Ministry

building, which executes chemical analyses of water and tests
the composition of foodstuffs. Apart from routine analyses
of drinking water, the laboratory also tests the water from
new wells. The Geological Section of the Ministry, located
at No. 45 Prospekt Staling, transmits to the laboratory
soil and water samples from the drillings carried out under
its supervision.
b. Sanitary-Epidemiological Station, located at No. 79
Bolshaya Street. This station is responsible for sanitary
standards in the city of Vilnius and its vicinity, and also
serves as a central control station for similar institutions
throughout the republic. It supervises the purity of food-
stuffs and the hygienic standards of public institutions and
factories. It checks the hygienic standards of factories by
testing various environmental factors liable to affect the
workers' health. The armed forces make use of the station's
facilities for the analysis of food and water, even though
they have their own laboratory located in the military
cantonment near the Kalvary Market in Vilnius. The analysis
is done particularly after cases of food poisoning have
occurred in army camps. In addition, the military forward

to the laboratory, at fixed intervals, the troops' daily
ration for chemical analysis, and to extablish the number
of calories. The station also engages in research of
contagious diseases; in recent years. it concentrated
on typhoid fever, which regularly affects a large part of
the population in the summ~er months.
c. The Institute of Hygiene (Institut Sanitarnoy Gigyeny)
located at No. 14 or 15 Tatarskaya Street. This institute
makes chemical analyses of soil, water, and food and its
activities are similar to those of the Sanitary-Epidemiological
Station.
4. The following individuals are affiliated with the Ministry

b. Lazutka (fnu), Deputy Minister of Health, is a
physician,
