the followin', vessels
were observed at Kronstadt (for the location, see sketch no. 1):
a. Six submarines.
Descriptions: One of them, which was sli-htly smaller than the remaining
five,
mha remaininc five were identical.
The height of the tower was three oP four meters over the deck, with a
built-in bridge. The hull was broad in relation with the length, and stream-
lined. There were no free-standing arms on either the forward or after-decks.
b. Alongside the next pier was a submarine belonging to the same class as
the five mentioned above.

This sub was,
however, equipped with a tank far out on the bow. The tank seemed to be
completely square, with sharp corners and sides, about two meters tall, and
two by two meters wide and lang. Besides this, the sub was equipped, forward
on the tower, with a five or six meter-tall, round mast, about two feet in
diameter, and at the top of the mast was a cylinder, about four feet Th diameter.50X1-HUM

This ship was red-lead painted and obviously was being overhauled. The height

were observed, identified
as destroyers. These were slightly
smaller and had a lower free board than the other destroyers that were observed.
h. Outside of Kronstadt Harbor, an older naval vessel was seen lying at anchor.
Description: The ship was evidently the ELISABETH. She was flush-decked
with a high free board. There were two guns on the forward deck, three-inch
caliber. Two smokestacks followered, then two guns on the after-deck, about
three-inch caliber. The stern hung far out over the water. There were no rails

six destroyer-like vessels
and a submarine were observed inside the following areas that on Chart 50X1-HUM
are marked as closed-off areas: 50X1-HUM
The area is bounded by the following positions:
N 60?00.5' - V 27? 17'
N 60705.5' - E 27' 34'
N 59?51.5'- E 27 0 26.5'

about 2000 tons. All of them were identical, with one smokestack.
No details of the submarine were observed.

a naval vessel on a northerly course was observed.
Description: F The size was about 2000
tons. There was a gun turret on the forward deck, but it was impossible to see
the number of guns. The bridge structure had a mast on it. The break to the
main deck was on the stern-side of the bridge superstructure. One smokestack
with a topmast forward. There was still another mast with a large antenna at
the top aft of the smokestack. (See sketch no. 4).

a tanker of an estimated fourteen to fifteen thousand tons
deadweight was launched from a bedding at the Baltic Yards.
b. The Marti Shipyard.
Alongside the outfitting wharf at the Marti Yards was the atomic ice-breaker
LENIN. It was maintained by the Soviets that she had not made her trial voyage
yet, but she was obviously almost finished. The greatedt width was said to be
24 meters. The propulsion machinery generated 44,000 HP. There were three
propellers. A very small smokestack aft of the bridge superstructure. The
smokestack stuck up from a supersturcture, however, and the red smokestack-
belt had been painted on the superstructure in such a way that it was easy to
get the impression that this was an ordinary smokestack.
It was noted that mast-scaffolding is typical of Soviet shipyards. This
scaffolding is used during the overhauling of naval vessels as well as during
that of commercial vessels. Even a four-masted sailing ship that lay in the
harbor at Kronstadt had these scaffolds around each mast all the way up to the
tops of the masts.
3. THE HARBOR: The wharf Granitnaya Stenka towards the Morskoy Channel was
being improved. A new wharf-edging was being cast about two meters outside of
the old edge.
(See sketch no. 5 for observations in Leningrad).
