Activity in the RERIK Ares. 1. S;;viot A.A. -Situ on WUSTROW Poninsular (PE 6798) (a) Topography TopographyandSecurity A large Soviet AA Site is situated on the WUSTROW Peninsular. The only entrance to this site is through a large gate at about IM PE 705986. This gate is in the middle of a barbed- wire fence which effectively prevents all access to the peninsular. Between the gate was guarded 50X1-HUM by Russian sentries, but there -ras also a .z rd-house nearby which was manned by E.G.A. troops. (b) Personnel There were at least 1500 men on this site on. They 50X1-HUM wore dark-red shoulder-boards with Artillery and Transport insignia variously. The Garrison Corpmander/lives in RERIK, Kastanienallee 3. His house has a notice outside it with "M 102" on it, and "Soviet Forces$ Commandant" in Russian and German. (c) Installations- About 15 one-storied stone buildings are at approx. MR PE 695978. there were also an unspecified number 50X1-HUM of tents fairly near these buildings, in a wooded area. At opprox. MR PE 692977 was a vehicle park which contained about 250 trucks. (d) in an area round approx. IVIR PE 689976 stood :+.t least 60 AA guns in several rows :with their barrels pointing at an angle of about 500 with the ground. These guns were mostly iOO mm in calibre, but some :are possibly 57 mm. In a wooded area P. little further west were more guns (unspecified number) and heavy vehicles (possibly tracked) with canopies. /2... SECRET CONTROL U. S. IIIZ PE 684978, -rere the following 50X1-HUM (i) About 15 metros above ground, including the height of a small building on -.which it -pas mounted, 8 - 10 metres broad antenna and about 3 metros high. Concave. Described as being like one of the arms of a TQI2? only with more rounded ends. Revolving continuously. (ii) About the s,--ma height from the grcund as (i), also en a small building. Similar to (i) only smaller - ^bout 5 metros broad and 1.0 - 1.50 metros high. Concave. Revolving occasionally. (iii) Similar to (i) and (ii), also on a building. Probably not conc-:w_:. 5 - 6 mitres broad, .bout 2 metros high. (iv) Vehicle-mounted, tontativ:ly identified as C110SSPOf1K. St?.nding near seine of the AA guns. (f) Activity (i) Reteoon 2000 and 2030 hours I I about 40 - 45 50X1-HUM rrimo movers, tent-.tivoly identified as Yc. - 14/AT-L's, left the site and wont in the direction of T\NEUBUI'_0W. Each was towing a gun similar in appearance to a 100 mrn. AA gun, but covered with tarpaulin. Some of the prime-movers gore r)artly loaded with green ammunition cases, the size of which is not '-mo-.m. On t~.To or three of the guns, a soldier was sitting str,,ppod on to the seat and holding red and yellow.., signelling-fla.as. At about 2100 hours, a column of trucks filled .pith soldiers loft the site and drove in the same direction. (ii) Iat 0850 hours, 15 x trucks and 2 x Signals vehicles left the site and drove east:rards. Some 12 of the trucks .aerie towing guns covered with tarpaulins, and 2 wore towing field kitchens . Four or five of the trucks had in them 15 - 20 soldiers e ch, others were partly loaded with green ammunition cases. At 144.5 hours, 7 x truc!r-s .pith 15 - 20 men in cat left the site and drovo oast.rards. at 2300 hours, the sound of gunfire came from the site. 12 - 15 detonations wore hoard following quickly on one another, then there was a 5-minute pause. The shooting continued in this pattern for about half an hour. 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM (iv) at 1020 hours, the sound of both heavy 50X1-HUM and i.g gunfire came from the site. Firing was at windstockings being to: red by two aircraft. The firing lasted for about 5 minutes. During this time the heavy gunfire camo in bursts of '_ - 1 second, while: lighter automatic firing was almost continuous. Some of the lighter firing was with tracer. (f) (iv) standard of marksmanship, jadgad by the position of the bursts and the tracer, was good. At 1830 hours, the firing reeommenc,:d and continued in bursts of about two minutes with pauses bet eon of anything up to 45 minutes until 2315 hours. EGA-Site-at MR PE 714994 At P;SIZ PE 714994 is a small, one-storied building with a w.aireleus mast on top of it. The mast is about 6 metres high, and has a croca- piece near the top of it. The site is not heavily gu;.:.rdod or fenced. at least two E.G.A. soldiers -.ore on the site. 3. EGA Area at Iii PP 725006 ---------------------- (a) on area round TM PP 725006 -ras being used by the EGA. The area was enclosed only by a simple rope fence and was a tented camp, the only permanent feature of ,which was one one-storied building. No estimate of the number of personnel in the area is possible, but 30 - 40 men wore occupied cleaning vehicles and kicking a football around. Otherwise there ,.?-:s no activity. (b) 80 - 90 x trucks wore parked on a vohiclo parking area within the site. 7 x AFVs were parked in the area. These AFVs had 4 x driving wheels and had twin guns of an unspeciflod, but not very large calibre. /4... SECRET CONTROL -:: U. S. EGA Area ;t-j-PF-732017 (a) + ^ Tn. m,_ an area round 11R PP 732017 was being used by fence and was a tented camp without permanent features. No estimate of the number of personnel in the area is possible. There was no activity other than vehicle- cleaning. (b) 6 x AA guns in appearance like those in the Soviet site on the WUSTROW peninsular (see pars 1(d)) were drawn up in two rows facing the sea. The rows wore staggerod. On a vehicle parking area wore 10 - 12 x Trucks, one tracked prime-mover (type unspecified) and one signals vehicle with a tentatively identified CROSSFORK on it. 5. EGA Area at MR PP 738024 ------------------------ ( L) an area round Ike? PP 738024 was being used by the EGA. There was no fence round the area, but access ass barred by wooden barriers on tracks. A tented camp, without any permanent features was in the area. (b) 2 x unidentified guns, completely covered with tarpaulins stood in the area. 12 x Trucks were parked in the area. 1 x unidentified electronic apparatus on a trio-nxlod trailer was also in the area (see description and sketch at p:ra 8). 6. EGA 1Z,_dnr-Siteat_ _' PP744016 Signals vehicles equipped with tentatively identified -CROSSFORKS, covered with camouflage nets. Nearby there was one small personnel tent and a small open bunker of unknown shape or purpose. Thor wore a four EGA soldiers on -land, .but no particular activity was taking place. 7. EGA Area_t Plat-PE-724993 (a) west, and a short axis of about 250 - 300 metres running approx. north-north-west/south-south-west. There was no more than . rope fence round the area, but occasionally round the boundary there were weapon-slits with barbed-wire in front of them. Those slits were occasionally occupied by sentries. Thero ere two entrances to the ,area, one from the north and one from the At each entrenco is a small guard-tent, with a sentry with a machine-gun (typo unspecified). The Machine aLnd Tractor Station at RMIK ----------------------------------- In the it2..chino and Tractor station at MIX rer two of the apparatus:.s mentioned above in Para 5(b). Some hind of testing of these .pp:,.r.tuseo was going on, and they sore ,-.t ;ached by .a cable to a form of small power plant. The --corking part of the apparatus occupied almost thc ti;hole trLiler, and consisted of a number of dials and ,la-ws which h,.^ .d instructions on them in Russian. There ?.r s also round 'erindorr in Jhich, -'ehon the appar ?.tus turned on, -. red zig-zag line began appearing. It is not cert .in ;rh:;ther this line was appearing on paper or on some kind of electronic tube. The T-structure on top had on it t,.ro objects similar to the eye-- pieces of a range-finder.
