NORTH VIETNAM
1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS FOUR NEWLY IDENTIFIED SA-2 SAM SITES
AND ONE NEWLY IDENTIFIED SAM SUPPORT FACILITY IN NORTH VIETNAM. (SEE
NPIC BRIEFING BOARDS FOR ADDITIONAL NEWLY
IDENTIFIED SAM INSTALLATIONS. OBSERVED IN NORTH VIETNAM ON THIS MISSION.)
2. REMARKS:
THE FIRST SAM SITE IN NORTH VIETNAM (HANOI SAM SITE B17-2)
WAS OBSERVED ON PHOTOGRAPHY. SAM SITES 2 AND 3 WERE FIRST OBSERVED IN MAY;
SITE 4 IN JUNE; SITES 5, 6, AND 7 IN JULY; SITES 8 THROUGH 18 IN AUGUST;
SITES 19 THROUGH 22 IN SEPTEMBER; SITES 23 THROUGH 33 IN OCTOBER; SITES
34 THROUGH 52 IN NOVEMBER; SITES 53 THROUGH 64 IN DECEMBER; AND SITES 65
THROUGH 90 IN FEBRUARY 1966. (SITES 10, 18, AND 50 HAVE SINCE BEEN ABAN-
DONED AND PROBABLY RETURNED TO AGRICULTURE, BRINGING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF
KNOWN SAM SITES IN NORTH VIETNAM TO EIGHTY-SEVEN.)

1. SIGNIFICANCE: THE RUNWAY AT TIEN-YANG AIRFIELD IS SERVICEABLE.

TIEN-YANG AIRFIELD IS ONE OF 4 AIRFIELDS WHICH
HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IN SOUTH/SOUTHWEST CHINA
IN THE PAST 14 MONTHS. THE AIRFIELDS AT NING-
MING, CHIA-LAI-SHIH, AND PING-YUAN-CHIEH HAVE
BEEN COMPLETED, HOWEVER, AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN OB-
SERVED ONLY AT NING-MING AIRFIELD.

SPECIFICATIONS: RUNWAY - 7,350 X 160 FT, NW/SE, CONCRETE.
OVERRUNS - 1,340 FT GRADED-EARTH AT EACH END.
9. MISSION READOUT: THIS MISSION REVEALS THAT THE RUNWAY AT TIEN-
YANG AIRFIELD IS SERVICEABLE. FACILITIES INCLUDE A CONCRETE RUNWAY WITH
A GRADED-EARTH OVERRUN AT EACH END, A PARALLEL TAXIWAY, 2 END-CONNECTING
LINKS, 2 CROSSOVER LINKS, AND 3 PARKING APRONS. AIRCRAFT DISPERSAL AREAS
CONTAINING A TOTAL OF 28 REVETTED HARDSTANDS ARE LOCATED NORTH OF THE NW
END AND EAST OF THE SE END OF THE RUNWAY AND ARE IN THE TERMINAL STAGES
OF CONSTRUCTION.
AT LEAST 150 WORKERS' HOUSES/CONSTRUCTION BUILDINGS SURROUND THE AIRFIELD.
