(S/IXNINTEL A new Soviet tactical aviation airfield consisting of' a 2.5021- by -44-meter. partially complete, northeast/southwest concrete runway, a parallel taxiway: two end-connecting links: and a link taxiway was identified near Krasnyy Velikan in a midstage of construction on imagery of Figure 1). 2. (S/WNINTEL) The airfield was first observed in a very early stage of construction onE and was reported as Krasnyy Velikan Airfield majority of construction work on the airfield has taken place si mately 2,000 meters of the main runway having been completed by September. A construction support area including a housing and two vehicle storage facilities is adjacent to the main runway. No perma- nent airfield support facilities have been observed. A road extends beyond the limits of photograph- ic coverage to the east and may lead to other support facilities. 3. (S/WNINTEL) It cannot be determined from the current stage of construction it' the airfield will serve as a deployed tactical aviation airfield or as a hardened dispersal airfield. Three major Soviet military airfields (Figure 2) are within a 100-nautical-mile (nm) radius of Krasnyyy Velikan ;Airfield--- Borzya Airfield Northwest and Olovyannaya Airfield tactical avia- tion airfields, and Khada Bulak Airfield North a PVO aviation airfield. 4. (S) Krasnyy Velikan Airfield is 24 nm southeast of Borzya and 27 nm north-northeast of' the Sino-Soviet Border in the Transbaikal Military District.
