The possible field deployment patterns were observed during a probable SS-X-23 SRBM troop training exercise. This exercise occurred in three areas approximately 4 nautical miles southeast of Kapustin Yar system were observed on imagery of at Kapustin Yar Missile/Space Test Center SSM 1. (S/WNINTEL) Possible field deployment patterns for the SS-X-23 short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) SRBM Test Complex A Site 1 2. (S/WNINTEL) In the first area (48-40-02N 046-20-17E), two probable SS-X-23 transporter-erector- launchers (TELs), one net covered, were present (Figure 1). A net-covered possible electronics van truck was parked to the side of each TEL and perpendicular to the long axis of the TEL. The cabs of the trucks were pointed away from the TELs. A truck and a possible second truck (both net covered) were parked side-by-side in front of the TELs, and three other support trucks were observed in the area. 3. (S/WNINTEL) In the second area (48-41-12N 046-21-46E), one net-covered probable SS-X-23 TEL and two possible electronics van trucks were observed. Two other trucks were parked together in front of the TEL. The arrangement of the vehicles was similar to that seen at the first area, minus the second TEL (Figure 2). 4. (S/WNINTEL) The third area (48-41-34N 046-20-26E) may have been a support area for the exercise. A vehicle pattern similar to that at the other two areas was not discernible. A probable SS-X-23 TEL and a probable TEL/resupply vehicle were observed in the area. The TEL appeared to have an antenna either on the vehicle itself or on the ground to the left of the vehicle, aft of the cab (not visible on the graphic). Two missile transporters (one net covered with a missile airframe canister), two GAZ-53A/ZIL-130 cargo trucks (one net covered), three trucks, and two net-covered vehicles/pieces of equipment (Figure 3) were also observed.
