RELOCATION OF SCALEBOARD BRIGADE AND NEW ARTILLERY BRIGADE
CENTRAL ASIAN MILITARY DISTRICT, USSR (S)
1. (S/D) During July 1980, the SCALEBOARD brigade in the Central Asian Military Dis-
trict, USSR, was relocated from Sary-Ozek SSM Mobile Missile Support Base to
Sary-Ozek IRBM Launch Site I 8.5 nautical miles (nm) to the west-northwest.
The former SCALEBOARD garrison was subsequently reoccupied by an army-level artillery bri-
gade.
2. (S/D) Major elements of the SCALEBOARD brigade were present on at Sary-
Ozek SSM Mobile Missile Support Base. Additionally, at least eight artillery pieces were parked
outside the garrison. By~ 16 130mm field guns M-46 with truck prime movers, four 152mm
gun howitzers ML-20 with truck prime movers, and 16 100mm antitank (AT) guns with MT-LB
prime movers were outside and adjacent to the
SCALEBOARD canisters had been removed by[

100mm AT battalion, and a 152mm gun howitzer ML-20 battery were in garrison (Figure 2). A full
152mm gun howitzer ML-20 battalion had arrived by and much of the equipment had
been put into vehicle storage sheds by This new artillery brigade is probably subordinate
to the 17th Army Corps, which was previously without a subordinate brigade.'
3. (S/D) At Sary-Ozek IRBM Launch Site 1, two SCALEBOARD transporter-erector-launchers
(TFLs), one probable SCALEBOARD resupply vehicle, four MAZ-535/537 HD cranes, and at least 21
probable SCALEBOARD canisters (some not shown on the graphic) were newly identified on imagery
of0 (Figure 3). Deactivation of this former SS-5 launch site began in January and had been
completed by mid-April.
