NORTHWEST NICARAGUA
1. (SE:~ SIGNIFICANCE: RECENT FLOODS HAVE CAUSED
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN NORTHWEST NICARAGUA.

SHOWED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO LINES OF COMMUNICATION 25X1
AS WELL AS TO CROPS AND PROPERTY IN NORTHWEST NICARAGUA.
FLOOD DAMAGE WAS PARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE IN CHINANDEGA
DEPARTMENT, WHERE SECTIONS OF RAIL LINES AS WELL AS HIGHWAY
AND RAIL BRIDGES WERE DESTROYED.
(S~ INCLUDED IN THE NUMBER OF DESTROYED BRIDGES IS 25X1
THE 100 METER, TWO-SPAN, STEEL AND CONCRETE BRIDGE OVER THE
RIO GUASAULE AT THE SAN PEDRO HONDURAS/NICARAGUA BORDER
CROSSING POINT. THE BRIDGE DECK AND SUPER-STRUCTURE WERE
COMPLETELY LIFTED FROM THE SUPPORT PIERS AND CARRIED FROM
THE BRIDGE SITE BY FLOOD WATERS. (GRAPHIC 1 OF 2)
(S A 25 METER, TWO SPAN, THRU-TRUSS RAILROAD
BRI CHICHIGALPA WAS WASHED FROM ITS PIERS AND A
CONSIDERABLE PORTION OF THE RIVER BANK WAS ERODED AT THE
BRIDGE SITE. (GRAPHIC 2 OF 2) THE DESTRUCTION OF THIS
BRIDGE, ON THE ONLY RAIL LINE BETWEEN CORINTO PORT AND
MANAGUA, INTERRUPTS RAIL TRAFFIC BETWEEN NICARAGUA'S MAJOR
PORT AND THE CAPITAL CITY.
