Attachment to Z-15238/82 NPIC/IEG (6/82) 7 JUNE 1982 NEW HELIPORT UNDER CONSTRUCTION SZPROTAWA"Al .FIELD, POLAND 2.(S/D) REMARKS: A HELIPORT IN EARLY STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION WAS OBSERVED OFF THE WESTERN END OF SZPROTAWA AIRFIELD 125X1 CONSTRUCTION CONSISTS OF GROUND SCARS 25X1 FOR A STOL RUNWAY, PARALLEL TAXIWAY, THREE LARGE APRONS, AND AT LEAST 17 HELICOPTER HARDSTANDS. SEVERAL PIP'CES OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT ANTI PROBABLE PIERCED STEEL PLANKING WERE OBSERVD THROUGHOUT THE AREA. SZPROTAWA AIRFIELD IS CURRENTLY NOT' OPERATIONAL WITH MAJOR RENOVATION TO THE RUNWAY AND TAXIWAYS UNDERWAY. WHEN OPERATIONAL THE AIRFIELD WILL SUPPORT A FENCER- EQUIPPED FIGHTER-BOMBER REGIMENT. SZPROTAWA AIRFIELD IS 32.5 NM EAST OF THE POLAND-EAST GERMANY BORDER. (S/D) ANALYSTS COMMENTS -- THE NUMBER OF HARDSTANDS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION IS SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT AT LEAST A SQUADRON- SIZE UNIT OF 15 TO 20 HELICOPTERS. THERE ARE NO SOVIET SQUADRON- SIZE HELICOPTER UNITS CURRENTLY BASED IN POLAND. THE ONLY SOVIET HELICOPTER ASSETS CURRENTLY IN POLAND ARE AN ASSAULT HELICOPTER REGIMENT BASED AT LEGNICA AIRFIELD AND A COMBAT 25X1 ATTACK REGIMENT BASED AT BRZEG AIRFIELD THE 25X1 MOST RECENT DEPLOYMENT OF SQUADRON-SIZE HELICOPTER UNITS TO EASTERN EUROPE HAS BEEN THE DEPLOYMENT OF HIP JAMMER JJNTTS TO COORDINATES 51-33-42N 015-35-11E 25X1 25X1 LJ/\ I These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed ana- lytical work.
