(S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: THE BROVARY-02 SELF-PROPELLED PONTON FERRY HAS BEEN DEPLOYED TO THE BALTIC MILITARY DISTRICT. 2. (S/D) REMARKS: SEVEN BROVARY-02 SELF-PROPELLED PONTON FERRY ARE PRESET.- THE BROVARY-02 ARE IN THE VEHICLE PARK WHICH HOUSES THE 9TH GUARDS ENGINEER REGIMENT, A UNIT SUBORDINATE TO THE BALTIC MILITARY DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS. THE BROVARY-02 COMBINES THE CAPABILITIES OF THE HEAVY FOLDING PONTON BRIDGE (PMP) AND THE HEAVY AMPHIBIOUS FERRY (GSP) IN A SINGLE VEHICLE. THE BROVARY-02 WAS RECENTLY OBSERVED IN THE ZAPAD-81 EXERCISES AND ITS DEPLOYL1ENT IN UNIT STRENGTH TO THE MILITARY DISTRICT SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES THE RIVER CROSSING ABILITY OF ARMIES THERE. (S/D) KAUNAS IS IN THE BALTIC MILITARY DISTRICT APPROXIMATELY 40 NM NORTHEAST OF THE POLAND-USSR BORDER. 3.1 (COORDINATES 54-51-38N 023-57-40E COMMENTS AND QUERIES REGARDING THIS BRIEFING BOARD MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE NPIC/PEG OPERATIONS OFFICER.
