(S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: SOVIET SIGNAL ACTIVITY HAS INCREASED IN POLAND. 2.-(S/D) REMARKS: TWELVE TWIN PLATE TROPOSCATTER (TROPO) RELAY SETS (NOT ALL ON GRAPHIC), SUBORDINATE TO A TWIN PLATE BATTALION (BN), ARE BEING DEPLOYED IN AN OPERATIONAL CONFIGURATION IN TWO LOCATIONS NORTHEAST AND SOUTHEAST OF MIEDZYRZECZ ARMY BARRACKS KESZYCA 201 (GRAPHIC 1 OF 2). THIS ACTIVITY WAS NOT OBSERVED EIGHT TWIN PLATE 25X1 STATIONS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO THE NORTHEAST AREA, AND FOUR TWIN PLATE TROPO RELAY STATIONS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO THE SOUTHEAST AREA. ACTIVITY IN BOTH AREAS INDICATES THE UNITS ARE PROBABLY IN THE PROCESS OF ERECTING THE ANTENNAS. THE THREE RADIO RELAY STATIONS (RADREL), DEPLOYED IN A SEMICIRCLE ON THE NORTH, EAST, AND SOUTH EDGES OF THE INSTALLATION ON ARE NO LONGER PRESENT. 25X1 IN POSSIBLY RELATED ACTIVITY, THE TWIN PLATE TROPO RELAY BN HAS DEPARTED REMBERTOW ARMY BARRACKS 203 (GRAPHIC 2 OF 2). A PROBABLE PARK DRIVE SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS (SATCOM) SET IS IN TRAVEL MODE IN THE TWIN PLATE BN VEHICLE PARK. PARK DRIVE IS NOT NORMALLY SEEN IN THIS AREA. TWO ZSU-23/4 SELF-PROPELLED ANTIAIRCRAFT ARTILLERY (SPAA) GUNS ARE ALSO PRESENT. ZSU-23/4 SPAA WERE LAST OBSERVED PROVIDING SECURITY HERE DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE POLISH CRISIS. OTHER DEPLOYED EQUIPMENT INCLUDES A CATS PAW RADREL STATION AT THE EAST END OF THE ATHLETIC FIELD AND AN R-400/404 ANTENNA (NOT ON GRAPHIC). MIEDZYRZECZ IS APPROXIMATELY 40 NM EAST OF THE EAST GERMANY-POLAND BORDER AND HOUSES THE SOVIET SIGNAL BRIGADE SUBORDINATE TO THE NORTHERN GROUP OF FORCES. REMBERTOW IS APPROXIMATELY 75 NM WEST OF THE USSR-POLAND BORDER AND HOUSES These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed ana- lytical work. IN THE PAST, BOTH UNITS HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUPPORT OF CONTINGENCY COMMUNICATIONS DURING PERIODS OF INCREASED TENSION IN POLAND. THIS ACTIVITY MAY NOW BE RELATED TO SOVIET CONCERN OVER RELAXATION OF MARTIAL LAW IN POLAND.
