Translations In the USSR Academy of Sciences' Biology Pavilion at the Exhibi-
tion of the Achievements of the USSR t1,~tional Economy, ~. new exhibit named
"Biological Damage to Industrial t;aterials" iN .opening. Its displays toll
of unexpected problems arising as a result of the extensive intrusion of
man into the biosphere of the planet.
Just a few instances give an idea of the seriousness of the
problem to which the exhibit is devoted, The death of the Anerican astronaut
fireeman, whose plane collided with a goose during a training; s].it~ht, tho
explosion of an American rocket duo to a collision with biniS, destruction
of port and shore structures and pipelines plunged with bacteria...
Since 19G~3, the Scientific Council on Theorotieal Problems of I3iolo--
gical Damage to ~:ateria s :~.~s been xorking in the section of chemicwl-
engineering and biological sciences of the Presidium of the L~SR ticadetay of
Sciences. The results of its activity comprise the basis of the exhibit.
Studying the ecology of the woa3 mollusk made it possible to protect the
installation of the Volzhskaya Hydroelectric Station, the Dnepr Station, and
