Chuck's point is well taken: we should try to call things by their riiht mites; and if a radio is secret and Metal we should let the reader know. Perhaps one solution vould be to use both categories-- "clandestine" for radios that clearly fall into the "secret" caterfory and surgested substititions for all others. This might precipitate a debate vith BBC over which radios fall into what catetories, but it irht be worth the effort if we end up with more inf. motive, precise 1 sourcelines--- the apparent object of this whole exercise. EM Agree with Ed that it's difficult to assess BBC's objection to term "clandestine" as being "too strong" for most transmitters today when the specifics aren't provided. Perhaps BBC feels that these radios have been on the air so many years that they've gained some sort of legitimacy. This would be strange logic, since the radios' basic purpose and raison dletre (to subvert the governments in power) remains the same. I think use of the descriptions "location unknown" and "location unstated" would entail, initially, a lengthy argument over which of the two would apply to specific stations and thereafter endless hassles over nismidmin proposed changes from one category to the other. There also could be many consumer queries, some of which we might not be able to answer for security reasons (our pinpointing the location of a clandestine transmitter might be classified information) couldn't include a the various elements V'' definition of the term "clandestine." This information might be useful to a lot of consumers. (I'll never forget the time a consumer called the DR to ask whether "Our Radio" meant the Voice of America!) It's true that all these radios aren't necessarily illegal, strictly speaking. That is, there isn't anything illegal about a station located in Kunming going on the open air with broadcasts to Burma. But the stations do inply or purport to be something they aren't. Ile could well get into difficulties trying to explain to a consumer not privy to classified infc why "location unknown" got changed to "location uhs-cated" in a given case. :le should have one siLlple word to categorize the whole group, and I can't think of amrtliina better than "clans1P 21- i np ..
