Abstract Authors report-on experiments made with the distil-
lation of liquid fuel and the calculation of vola-
tility, liquid-vapor mixture, viscosity, etc. The
theory of using the centrifugal atomizer, as expounded
by 0. N. Abramovich and I. I. Novikov, and the formula
for the dimension of drops are presented. The testing
installation is discussed in detail and a curve
presents the fractional distillation of the liquid
fuel. A mathematical analysis of the unstable
fluctuations and the viscocity of the flow is
presented. Three diagrams. Five Russian references,
1931-1955, 1 German, 1931.

ists concerned with the design and operation of heating equipment
and It is also for scientific workers and students of vtuzes.
COVERAGE: The book presents the reBults of complex investigations of
flow conditlons and heat trRnsfer in boiler and furnace processesp
The compilation consists of three parts which discuss the condi-
tions of atomization and combustion of liquid-Nel, some problems
of heat transfer and flow in furnaces and boilers and, finally,
the results of investigations of the flow and heat transfer in a

layer of crushed material. The articles in the first part present
the fundamental principles for calculating the atomization process
in injectors. Also, new data on the combustion of droplets of
heavy liquid fuel are given which make it necessary-to reconsider
the accepted concept that vaporization of a liquid fuel always
precedes its combustion. The reports of the second part thriow
light on the problem of the motion of a dusty air stream charac-
teristic of cyclonic furnaces. This problem Is extremely.important
in the design of such furnaces. The second part of the collection
presents data necessary for the calculation of the erAission of fly
ash whereby it is shown that this emission Is of great significance.
!In addition, the character of furnace temperature fields'la ana-
lyzed. The articles of the third part present the fundamental laws
of gas flow through a layer of fuel and give the theoretical
principles necessary for,calculating the aerodynamic resistance
of the layer and the speed of drying In it, The data givqn in the
collection accurately define current Ideas regarding the charac-
teristics of development of a number of phenomena which form the

heating process. Knowledge of these data will perinit refining the
calculation methods used in heating technology. The fXrst part
contains 2 Soviet references; the second part contaIns 8 Soviet,

ences.

ABSTRA.CT: The author describey the way in which the first stovemen
of two shifts on a 1386-ml blast furnace at his works carry
out their duties. The fujnace i served by three stoves with
a total heating area of 8~.. 040 m and was blown in in August,
1956. The workers and fo,.--emen of all shifts on this furnace
act as a single team. On shift changing, Korniyenko warns
Abramov of likely changes in the working of the furnace and
points out any abnormalit', in the equipment, thus obviating
the need for equipment in3pection during s1hift changing. The
same procedure is followel by Abramov handing over to Yu.F.
Maydannik. The stoves ar! kept on air for 1.5 and on gas for
3 hours and-'the first sto;,emen ensure that the equipment is
used corr8etly and is in Sood repair. Maximal gome temperature
is 1 100 C, that under the checkers being 300 C. In
addition to operating the stoves, Abramov and Korniyenko help
the furnace operator, keeping themselves informed on opwating

should deviate from the 800-850 0C range, they advise the
operator to change the charging cycle. Other factos taken
into consideration are the top-gas temperature and the radial
distribution of Sarbon dioxide. Blast temperature is generally
kept at ?80-800 01 thermal conditions in the furnace being
controlled by blast-moisture alterations. Blast volume is
also kept constant as far as possible, the moisture content
being reduded to correct a too rapid descent of the charge.
Tuyeres are kept clear. In four months of 1957, the following
results have been achieved: over-production of pig iron,
6 911 tons, coke saving, 8 611 tons; time-off-blast 0.3% below
planned 'value; iron cost reduction, 15 rOubles per ton. The
author attributes this partly to the adoption of competition
between teams working furnaces under similar conditions, the
use of charging-cycle variations to control furnace working,
the liquidation of the marks system for evaluating shiftwork
and the unification of shifts into a single-production team

Two cases of Morgagnt -Adams -Stokes syndrome are described in patients suffer-
ing from rheumatic fever. In the first case total atrioventricular block alternated
with an atrioventricular block or with a sinus rhythm. In the course of the dincase
disturbance of intraventricular conductibility and Wilson block of the riglit b"dlo
branch Lppeared. In the 2nd case complete heart block alternated with atrioven-
tricular block. From a pathogenetic viewpoint it is necessary to suppose (1) a
toxic Influence not only on heart conductibility but also (2) changes of the vege-

Abstract: [Authors' English summary modified" In an in-
vestigation of the value of tho coagulohoptogram in the e-
valuation of liver function tests in hepatic cirrhosis, dc-
terminations wore made of activity of the prothrombin com-
plox, fibrogon level, prothrombin, Factors V and X, complex
of Factors VII and X, and thromboplastinogenesis test. it
was found to be a sensitive index of liver function insuf-
ficiency, though only the determination of the prothrorabin
level by the turo-stage method is of practical importance.
