Report of a boy of 8 months who was admitted on account of
intestinal haemorrhage
and tarry stools. The clinical diagnosis of ulcer of
Meckel's diverticulum was
surgically verified. 45 cm. over the ileocaecal valve,
there was a diverticulum
4 cm. long and 1.5 cm. thick, from which blood had flowed
into the intestine. It
was excised i.-i a wedge-shape. The boy recovered very
satisfactorily. (IX, 7)

The management of children without extrahepatic bile drainage

pertinent case histories of patients operated upon by the
author are commented on.
After a small region of the left border of the liver had been
severed, a hepato-
gastrostomy was carried out. The immediate postoperative
outcome was favourable
but later on the first child died from pneumonia after a
survival of 15 days and the
2nd child from sepals 2 months after operation. The results
were more encourag-
Ing In 2 other cases. Two anastomoses between liver and
stomach were carried
out in each child, the one Junction in the region of the
gallbladder and the other in
the left liver lobe. They have so far survived 6 and 7
months. respectively. but the
prognosis is considered to be doubtful.

ABSPRACT.- An attenpt was made to di5cover the origin of the
sulfur which appears
as zinc sulfide in the reclamation process z)f vulcanized
rubber. To this end the
reactions taking place in the absence of oxygen between zinc
sLearate or zinc
oxide and thu ethyl eLher of dibutyltithiocarhaminic acid
(FDTCA), dipropylmono-
sulfide (DPIMS), and dially1monosulfice (Ek,',S) were studied.

20W for 5 hours,
then the compounds were analyzeJ for sulfide sulfur. At 16T-
only an insignifi-

to 2%. The reaction of zinc stearate with DPMS was conducted at
200 and~220C,
without any ZnS being forned. As to DMIS, it war, reacted with

TEXT: A new method is developed for the synthesis of the
stereoisomers
of 2,5-disubstitutecl.thiophane (I thiophane). By bromination of
adipic
acid (II) a mixture (--,90~) of almost equal amounts of the
isomers of
2-5-dibromo-II is obtained, and these are separated by the WWI
esters
(EE) into the crystalline meso- and the liquid racemic forms in
a yield
of 30%. The latter are cyclized by the action of (NH ) 5 in a
mixture

of water and alcohol and acetone in the cold to form the
isomeric EE of
thiophane-2,5-dicarboxylic acids (III) in a yield of 64-65A. on
reduction of the trans- and ois-III the corresponding glycols
are easily

obtained (yield -100%). These are unstable to heat. The
halogenides
prepared from them (PBr 3 or SOCI2 in the cold) are of low
reactivity. For
instance LiAlH4 reduces them only with difficulty to
2,5-dimethyl-I in a
yield of 35%. Li-organic compounds react more energetically.
With
C6H5 Li, from cis-2,5-dibromo-methyl-1 firstly
cis-2,5-dibenzyl-I is
obtained in a yield of 55W,6. Another possible method: III +
CH 3MgI
(or C2'H 5ligBr)->2-5-bis-dialkyl-oxymethyl-I (yield 42-75%)-
2-5 bis-dialkyl
chloro-methyl-I (IV) -HCl (acid) yield 75k did not give
results, since
IV does not form an Mg-organic compound az~d is only with
difficulty
reduced with a large excess of LiAIR 4 even with prolonged
boiling. The
substances so -formed, yield 50%, probably consist of a
mixture of the
corresponding-2,5-bis-dialkylmethyl-I and the prodUots of
dehydrochlorina-
