TITLE: For Greater Scientific Activity Among Engineers of
Com-
bat Units (Aktivizirovat' nauchnuyu rabotu inzhenerov
stroyevykh ohastey)
PER IODICAL: Vestnik vozdushnogo flota,, 1958, Nr 8, pp
80-81 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The authors are of the opinion that a closer
coopera-
tion between the engineers of combat units and related
specialists in academies and higher educational insti-
tutues Is needed to effect a more efficient exploita-
tion of combat materiel. They also note that a special
periodical for the engineers would be of great impor-
tance.

ABSTRACTs During the recent time, new intrusive and extrusive
manifest-
ations of Cenozoic magmatism have been discovered in the North
Caucasus.
The author holds that Eldzhurtin granites and trachyte-lipaY-
ite are of the Cenozoic (Tertiary) age.
The essential development Of Cen02OiC magmatiam manifestations
has been detected in the upheaval zone of the sub-meridional
direction from Stavropol' to the parts of the Main Caucasus
ridge near the mountain pass. The author considers the origin-

basalt represent the roots of effusive magmatiam of the Quart-
enary age.
The author gives a map of distribution of magmatism, manifest-
ations for most areas for which the Cenozoic age has been
confirmed by the data of absolute age.
The author cites figures of the age of some rocks determined
by the K - Ar method, and points out that some of them differ
from the data obtained by other methods. He sees the reasons
for these discrepancies first in the non-simultaneous origin-
ation of individual minerals composing those rocks, and second,
in the migration of argon from the minerals into the
atmosphere.

drawn from this table are:
1. The age values of both the muscovite and perthitized
microcline from the same pegmatite vein turned out to be
identical, 190,000,000 years, for the certain section of the
North Caucasus. These values agree also with geological data
of their age.
2. The rigid massif of the Peredovoy mountain ridge was
intruded in the region of the Yatyrgvarta mountain with
small
intrusions of diorites and anorthoclase granites. Here the
age values of individual ro&ke vary from 175 to 220 million
years,

ABSTRACT: Two objects are of primary importance for contemporary
petrology:
complex petrographical-geological-geochemica1 studies of
mountain rocks, and experimental-synthetic studies of the pro-
cesses of mineralization and rock forming. Territorial ties
existing between rocks of volcanic origin and endogenous mineral
deposits permit the empiric conclusion of genetic connections
existing between these two formations. The author gives some
information on the status of petrographic exploration of the
USSR and puKishes numerous names of geologists-scientists
engaged in this work. He is of the opinion that considerable
research work has yet to be done in order to establish con-
formity to established rules of the formation of magmatic com-
plexes. The author cites several intrusions of the north
Caucasus region which were established in conjunction with de-
termination of the absolute age. Summarizing, the following
Card 1/3 problems have to be solved by magmatic geology;
Some Geologic Problems of Petrology
11-11-4/9
1. Systematic studies of magmatism of USSR territories
must be continued. Among the basic tasks which have to be
accomplished are the age determination of various magmatic
complexes with special emphasis on paleovolcanism, metamorphic
layers and metamorphic processes.
2. In territories which have been relatively well investigat-
ed (Kazakhstan, Urals, Caucasus and others) further detailed
studies are necessary in order to:
a. Establish the regularity of magmatic evolution as
to time and location in conjunction with the forming of geo-
logic structurest the locations of ore deposits during mag-
matic processes and to clarify the genetic connections exist-
ing between mineralization and intrusions, and to prepare
prospecting criterions. These studies are especially promis-
ing in areas of Meso- and Cenozoic magmatism, as found in
Kamchatka, Primorlye and in the Caucasus.
b. Clarify the relations existing between intrusive
and effusive magmatism in connection with geologic development
of the respective regions.
c. Analyze the question of magmatic formations, facies
and regions, especially for determining the depth of
intrusions.

ABSTRACTs
This
article sums up the works of many geologistsand pe-
trographers and presents a detailed table of the
stratigraphic
classification of magmatogene rocks of the
North Caucasus
according to their age. It stresses the
importance of study-
ing the presence of the radio-active
elements in these rooks.
These studies are not yet
completed, but from preliminary
surveys it was possible to
prepare tables of these rocks ac-
cording to their age and
to their petrographic peculiarities.
The study of endogenous
processes in the earth-crust will
enable us to enlarge our
knrledge of the general structure
of the earth andv

of foreign and Soviet scientists and geologists and conclude
that the systematic study of the presence of radioactive ele-

ABSTRACT: The author makes an attempt to generalize and also
to deter-
mine more accurately existing ideas on veined melanocratic
rocks associated with the granitoid intrusions usually clas-
sified as lamprophyres. According to G. Rozenbush, the
lamprophyres are not an independent formation as they exist
only in the vicinity of plutonic rocks. Their other charac-
teristic is that they are rocks of granular or porphyritic
structure. The author sums up the opinions of many geo-
logists, gives the result of the study of melanocratic rocks
in various parts of the USSR, and comes to the conclusion
that no well-defined solution of this problem can yet be
given. Existing data on the comagmatism of lamprophyric and
leucocratic veined rocks of an intrusive block permit one to

ABSTRACT:
The
author (discusses the importance of determining
the absolute
age of rocks for the soli~_t_ion of prob-
lems of
petrocrenesis and ore-formation connected
with magmatic
processes. Academician V.I. Vernads-
kiy was one of the first
who appreciated the scien-
tific and practical importance of
radioactive
methods for the determination of the absolute age
of rocks. The main methods are as follows: The
lead method,
based on the disintegration of elements
of the uranium,
actino-uranium and thorium. series.
During recent years this
method was particularly
developed in the Radiyevyy Institut
im. V.G. Khlo-

Institut geokhimii i analiticheskoi. khimii im. V.I.
Vernadskogo (Institute of Geoohc;mistr and Analy-
tical Chemistry imeni V.I. Vern,-Askiy~. The Argon
method is based on the disintegration of the radio-
active potassium isotope. The disintegration, of the
K 40 nucleus occurs by trapping the electron from
the surrounding electronic shell. The Strontiwn
met is based on the radioactivit of isotope
Rb the content of which is 26-5~~ of.5ubidium.
As a resu. t of the disintegration of Rb radio-
genic 3r8~ accumulates in the ninerals. The author
believes that the most accurate way of determining
the absolute age of minerals is the combined appli-
cation of the Argon and Strontium methods. The
author further gives absolute ages for rock forma-
tions of different parts of the Union. The age of
.pre-Cambriar, formations of the Baltic Paid Ukrainian
crystalline massifs was calculated in the Labora-

Formations of the AS USSR), vsesoyiaznyy n.i. geo-
logicheskiy institut (the All-Union Geological
Science Research Institute) -and in the laboratory
of E.K. Gerling. The age of these formations in
the Urals was calcul.-ted by L.N. Ovchinnikov a.o.-,
in Central Asia - by D.I. Shcherbakov, A.Ya.Krylo,.,
a.o.; in the Transbaykalian region - by Ye.I. Dolo-
manova, and in the Par East - by N.I. Folevaya
and Ye.K. Ustiyev. The author further describes
research conducted in ivestern countries, espeCially
the USA. There are 11 references, 10 of which are
Soviet and 1 American.
