Monitorial/Editorial -------------------- Following speculation that Israel might launch a strike against Libya in retaliation for December's terrorist attacks against the Rome and Vienna airports, the bureau placed Israeli media on open speaker watch on 4 January. Israeli officials subsequently ruled out a unilateral strike against Libya. Disagreements between the Likud and the Alignment over relations with Egypt once again raised fears that the Israeli coalition government might collapse. The crisis came to a head on 12 January and the Inner Cabinet held a marathon all-night session to resolve the differences. The bureau extended its hours of operation to cover the crisis, remaining open on 12 January until Jerusalem radio signed off at 2305 gmt and opening up 1*hour early the next morning. The bureau became involved in coverage of the PDRY conflict on 18 January, when Jerusalem Domestic Service began carrying reports by Mickey Gurdus, Israel's private one-man monitoring service, on the former PDRY president's escape to Ethiopia, based on intercepted conversations between the plane and the ground. The bureau remained open at the Wire's request until the former president's plane landed in Ethiopia. B. Lateral Services ---------------- Bureau cruising monitor surveyed Sanaa Domestic STAT Service from 23 to 31 December in response to a request from a local consumer. compiled a report on frequencies, reception STAT and broadcast times which was conveyed to the consumer the next week. On 27 January, the consumer called to express appreciation for the information, which proved very timely in light of subsequent developments in the region. Lateral Services (Cont'd) On 22 January, the head of the Embassy Political Section, Roger Harrison, expressed thanks to the bureau and to the Hebrew Section for a 21 January HA'ARETZ article translated in response to an "urgent" request from the Political Section. The article cited the Sephardic chief rabbi calling for the construction of a synagogue in a corner of Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Mr Harrison indicated that the article had proven "very useful." II. ADMINISTRATION A. Personnel Engineer arrived on 7 January. replaces who departed for Swaziland on 16 January. Teletypist EOD'ed on 2 February.
