NEW YORK TIME'S c nox, X - S 11 MARCH 1983 Maclean of Spy Fame Reported Dead in Soviet MOSCOW, March 10 (Reuters) -; Donald Maclean, the British diplomat who spied for Moscow more than 30 years ago, was reported tonight to be ill in a hospital and there were uncon- firmed reports that he had died. Mr. Macl ed to the Soviet Union in 1951 with Burgess, now dead, and after being tipped off that American counterintelligence agents were dosing in on them. Mr. Maclean took Soviet citizenship after his defeo tion and worked as an analyst of British( policies atp Moscow foreign reations.! institute. He is believed to have passed on for-. eign policy secrets to Moscow over a period of 15 years. bound after a six-week stay in a ' Mos-, cow clinic late last year, was not. at home in his riverside apartment -and neighbors said they did not know where he had gone.
