Works of the scientists named in this report have not been listed, but this information is generally available if required. The following information on Peyve's career is taken from a short biographical sketch written by P.I. Valeskaln (Academician Secretary of the Academy of Sciences Latvian SSR) on the occasion of Peyve's election to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia. Peyve was born (date not given) in the village of Sementsevo, Velikilukskaya Oblast. In 1946, he was elected an Active Member of the Academy of Sciences Latvian SSR and its Academician Secretary, and in 1951 be was elected President. He was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences USSR in 1953? From 1930 to 1954, Peyve published more than 100 works on the fertility of soils and methods of obtaining large harvests from the nonchernozem areas of the USSR. He has also published many textbooks for agricultural special- ists and farmers, for which he has been awarded the title of Honored Worker of Science, Latvian SSR. He has also been awarded three Orders of Labor Red Banner, two Orders "Badge of Hone:," and the medal "For Excellent Work in the Great Patriotic War 1941-45." (14) He was elected a member of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet USSR (7), and was awarded the Order of Lenin in April 1954. (8) A photograph of Peyve appears in source(14). Active Member of the academy (1), Professor-Doctor (specialty not given)-(3) Elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia (9), and a member of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.(7) The following bio- graphical information on Kirkhenshteyn is taken from an article published to mark the latter occasion. He was born in the hamlet of Mazsalatso. Valmiyerskiy Uyezd. After at- tending the village school and gymnasium, he went to the Yur'yevskiy Veterinary Institute and while still there, he wrote his first sci"n'.ific work, "The Effect of Chloroform on the Blood", which was awarded a silver.medal. In 1905, as a result of his revolutionary activities, he was forced to emigrate to Switzerland. (In an article entitled "The Bases of Prophylaxis and Therary of Tuberculosis With Regard to New Data on Antibiotics and Vitamins," Kirkhen- shteyn stated that he was in Davos between 1912 and 1914.[3]) He was able to return to Latvia in 1917, and carried on his work, writing articles on vitamin- ology, microbiology, and a number of other subjects. At this time, he became a Doctor of Agronomic Sciences and a Doctor of Biological Sciencer. In 1940, he was elected to the National Seym, and then to the Supreme Soviet USSR. For many years he has been Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet Latvian SSR. The division is located at Riga, U1. Smilshu; 1.(11) A report of the 29 April 1954 session of the presidium stated that it was proposed to admit 60 graduate students to the academy in 1954.(5) DEPARTMENT OF TECHNICAL SCIENCES K.K.Plaude is the Academician Secretary of the department. He is an Active Member of the academy and a member of the Editorial Board of Izvestiya Akademii Nauk Iatvi skoy SSR (2), and is also associated with the Institute of Power and Electrical Engineering.(1) Institute of Chemistry Address:.
