The 60th birthday of ,'.cademiclan Ifiatr iy Vladi.ii.rovich Skobel'tsyn, one
of the most distinguisl.cd scientist, of the USSR, occurred 24 November 1952.

., has worked in the fields of nuclear phys-
ics and cosmic rays. In '23, .e started work on the mechanism governing the
interaction of hard ga:r:a r-?'_ with matter by means of the Wilson chamber.
This was ar'ont, first wor. on nuclear physics in the USSR.
His particular ccntriiution was the ,ietection of recoil electrons origi-
suggested tcd by hard gamma rays o' radius;. Lhus confirming the quantum theory of light
by Debye and Compton.
The oethod for observing traces of hij:-energy particles, introduced by
Skobel'tsyr, was of particular value, detailed confirmation of the
Compton effect for gamin. rays and contributir4: a new method to gacsna-ray spec-
troscopy.

He is also deputy to the Supreme Soviet RSFSR.
In 1952, Skobel'tsyn was the first to be awarded the newly created medal
imeni S. I. Vavilov. Be also is the recipient of an Order of Lenin and two
Orders of the Labor Red Banner.
