L. In order to meet the requirements of the Polish State Plan, Polish
foundries must import about 1,000,000 tons of iron ore per year.
2. Most of the traneloading of ore is handled by the ports of Gdynia and
Gdansk (Danzig), where the volume is estimated to be 30,000 ton;
moetbly, except during the winter iaonttas? The monthly tranship.. Fnt
capacity of these two ports for all goods is placed at 250,000 tans,
but this amount is sometimes raised to as much as 300,000 tons To
take some of the strain off these ports, attention is being givea to
the development of the port of Szczecin (Stettin) and the navigation
possibilities of,the Odra (Oder) River.

of the ports of" Gdynia and Gdansk was placed in August 1947 at 10..000 tons
per day.)
In addition, Huts. Szczecin, formerly called Huta Stolczyn, located at
Stolezyn (Stolzenhagen) (054/x56) 7 kin,. north of Szczecin, is to he
enlarged,, and another new foundry is to be h9.ti 1.p:,..on the Gliwice
(Gl cwitz) canal.
iuta Szczecin put one blast furnace into commission in May 1947, and a
second one is under construction. Coking works,, cement works" a copper
foundry, and coal by-products installations are to be added to the plant
near future.
Figures for pig iron production at Huta Szczecin between May and August
1947 are as follows x May. 13 200 tons; Tunc, 2,88`5 tan ; Sul y, y 450
tons August, 4,300 tone. In August the plant employed around 11,100
?forkers. The technical director is Ing. F3erschf eld~,

CComment: Huta Stolczyn (Szczecin)
had one blast furnace working on 29 May 1947, with a capacity of
5,000 tons of pig iron per month. A second furnace, under construction
at that time, was expected to produce an additional 6,000 tons monthly.
About 800 workers were employed at the plant, which imports its ore

Up to 1950, the 1,000,000 tons of iron ore imported annually are to be
handled as follows: via Gdynia and Gdansk., 550,000 tons; via Szczecin
and the Odra River, 300 000 tons; to be used by Huta Szczecin, 150,000
}tons.
7. Facilities for transhipment on the Odra River are now limited to
82 barges, 5 self propelled barges, and 14 tugs. Before World War II v
the river fleet included 2,500 barges?and 600 tugs,, The 1947 plans for
transporting 150,000 tons of ore via the Odra were only fulfilled to the
extent of 5%.
