CROP PURCHASE HIGH IN CROATIA, LOW IN SLOVENIA
GRAIN PRODUCTION IN ZAGREB OBLAST SATISFACTORY -- Ljubljana Slovenski Porocevalec,
19 Jul 50
This year 92,274 hectares of land in Zagreb Oblast were planted in wheat,
rye, barley, and oats. In the 1948 - 1949 season only 71,800 hectares were sowed.
Although this year's drought hampered the production of oats, the total grain
production is satisfactory. It is almost certain that an average of 7 metric cent-
ners per oral was produced this year, or 12.2 metric centners per hectare.
Because of the greater area planted, Zagreb Oblast has produced 11,162 car-
loads of grain, or 2,000 carloads more than last year.
This year the compulsory delivery of grain in Zagreb Oblast amounts to 1,600
carloads of grain, as compared to 1,828 carloads last year.
The long drought all over Yugoslavia was detrimental to the production of
corn and several industrial plants. However, during the last few days it rained
throughout Yugoslavia. With sufficient rainfall, it is expected that the produc-
tion of late crops such as corn will improve. The Vojvodina was greatly benefited
by the last rainfall, and an improvement in the production of corn, vegetables, and
industrial crops is expected.
In the first half of 1950, 112 carloads more wool were delivered to the
government purchasing agencies in Yugoslavia than during the same time in 1949.
The 1950 wool-purchase plan for all of Yugoslavia thus far has been fulfilled by

87.4 percent. The wool producers in Macedonia have already delivered their
quota of wool to the government purchasing agencies and have fulfilled the
republic plan by 102.3 percent. Macedonia is expected to deliver 25,000
kilograms of wool above plan this year.
Serbia has completed 94.5 percent of its delivery plan thus far. The
crop purchase of wool in Serbia is continuing. Slovenia and Montenegro are
far behind their plans. Only 11 percent of the amount of wool allotted by
the plan has been delivered in Slovenia thus far.
SLOVENIAN POTATO PURCHASE LOW -- Ljubljana Slovenski Porocevalec, 21 Jul 50
In 1949, the crop-purchasing enterprises purchased 190 carloads of early
potatoes from farms in Slovenia. This year only 23 carloads were purchased
for Slovenian cities. Ljubljana alone consumes three carloads per day.
The reason for the poor showing of the crop purchase of potatoes is the
apathy of the purchasing enterprises.
Because of the drought, early potatoes ripened earlier than in 1949, and
yet only one-eighth as many potatoes were purchased this year than during the
same period in 1949.
At the moment, potato purchasing is in progress in only 13 srez, and of
these, eight have made an insignificant showing.
CROATIAN CROP PURCHASE SUCCESSFUL -- Ljubljana Slovenski Porocevalec, 20 - 21 Jul 50
Thus far 1,200 carloads of white grains and 300 carloads of wheat have been
purchased in Croatia by the government. The amount of grain purchased so far is
equal to the amount purchased by the government in 1949 by 15 August.
One of the reasons for the greater speed in purchasing is that the grain is
purchased directly at the threshing machines.
In Slovenia, on the other hand, only 20 carloads of white grains have been
purchased thus far, and this is below the planned amount. The reason for the
deficiency is that farmers did not get the threshing machines ready and purchasing
agencies did not hire enough workers.
CROP PURCHASING LAGS -- Ljubljana Slovenski Porocevalec, 14 Aug 50
By Wednesday of last week government crop-purchasing agencies purchased
376,000 kilograms of grain, or 40 percent of the planned amount for 1950, in
Ljubljana Suburbs Srez. The purchasing began at the end of July. Several farmers
in the srez delivered less than their quota of crops to government agencies, while
others refused to deliver and produce whatever. Consequently, the grain-purchase
program in Ljubljana Suburbs Srez is lagging.
DEEP PLOWING UNDER WAY -- Ljubljana Slovenski Porocevalec, 17 Aug 50
Deep plowing has already started in some parts of the Vojvodina. By 10 Au-
gust 1950, the deep plowint of 4,000 oral of land had been completed.
Last fall and winter the deep-plowing program was not carried out satisfac-
torily. The areas plowed to the usual depth suffered most during this sumzer's
drought.

the agencies purchased 600 carloads of grain per day.
REPORT GOOD FISH CATCH -- Belgrade Borba, 17 Jul 50
Rijeka, 16 July -- During the last 3 months, Yugoslav fishing cooperatives
and private fishermen of the northern part of the Adriatic Sea caught about
