The fire spread to the nearby woods where antiaircraft batteries were located. As the flame enveloped the ammunition crates, explosions followed in quick succession, until a powerful blast occurred midway between Alag and Dunakes?i at 0820 hours. Estimates as to the number killed vary; it is, however, certain that many members of the fire department and the ambulance crews died. The sound of the explosion.. was heard even in Budapest, and windows were shattered in an area of 4-5 kilometers from the fire, including Pestuihely, HakosezentmihnlY, and Sashalom. Although the press was not permitted to report the event, the news of the fire and explosion was k.ovn in the entire country in a few hours. The above report, broadcast by the Radio; Free Europe, has been confirmed by other sources. In general, the number of dead is estimated at 80. The trucks of the railroad cars traveling weatward are checked three times, because recently, many people succeeded in escaping by hanging on to the car bodies. EQUIP STALACTITE CAVE WITH RADIO TRANSMITTER -- Innsbruck, Unio Press Service, 23 Sep 52 The Forras Barlang (well cave) stalactite cave at the confluence of the Szimva and Garadna brooks near Hamor (Borsod llegye) has been declared "protected area" by the Orszagos Termeszatvedelmi Tanacs (National Council for the Pro- tection of National Resources) and has been closed to sightseers. Forced labor is being employed to equip the cave with electric lights and a radio transmitter, as well as to build a road for automobile traffic. It is reported that the forced labor gang consists of 1,100 persons, working under AVH supervision. The cave was inspected by a mixed AVH-Soviet ,,,..commission in mid-September. SET UP ARTILLERY DIVISION WEST OF THE DANUBE -- Innsbruck, Unio Press Service, 8?SeP 52 A new artillery division has been set up west of the Danube. Coeponrnts of the division are located at Papa, Komarom, Mor, and other towns. EJBJECT WOMEN TO MILITARY TRAINING -- Innsbruck, Unio Press Service, 7 Oct 52 It is a well-known fact in Budapest that 30-40 percent of the members of women's organizations are given military trainirr. Women taxi drivers, street- car drivers, and locomotive engineers are among those trained for military se_vice. ' The women trainees are made to march armed through Budapest to the sub- urban training grounds, where they must meet the same requirements in automatic- I,istol and hand-grenade practice as men. DETAILS OF FRONTIER GUARD TRAINING -- Innsbruck, Unio Press Service, 7 Oct 52 The members of the Hungarian Frontier Guard begin their actual training only after taking an oath. The Zalaegerszeg recruit company is training at Meszele. The trainees receive instruction in the search of homes, as well as in the pursuit of escapees at night, on the training ground. One phase of the training is to catch older frontier guards who are dressed in civilian clothing and who impersonate Yugoslav spice. Particular emphasis is placed on training the recruits to keep a distance of 100-150 meters between one anothe.. The frontier guard on duty is required to use his weapon if he or another person is attacked or if a suspect does not stop when challenged. After the examination at the conclusion of the training period, the recruits are distributed along the border. Only frontier guards who are mempers of the party or DISZ (Dolgozo Ifjak Szovetsege, Association of Working Youth) are de- tailed to the Yugoslav border. Recruits who fail Cie examination are given additional training lasting 2-3 months. Those who afain fail to pass the examination or are not considered entirely reliable re..win in a reserve company which is used in case of general alerts or raids. During the training period, recruitment is conducted for the AVH officers' school at the Budapest Petofi Academy, as well as for the noncommissioned officers, school at Poth, near Budapest, and the frontier guard dog school at Budapest.
