Two and a half years ago, the Solid industrial artel in Tallin began tan-
ning fish skins, At present, this work has expanded considerably. Several
industrial artela have begun to tan fish skins, Skins of weevers, dog salmon,
and cod, coming from Arkhangel?ak, Murmansk, and Khabarovsk, are being tanned.
The hide of dolphins and white whales is used for making thick soles. Re-
cently, the Sanger artel in Tartu received whaleskins from Murmansk which will
be made into sole leather.
Eight industrial artele in Tallin and Tartu now make various kinds of
shoes, women?s purses, women?s hsudbags, gloves, a.nd briefcases from fish
skins.(1)
The Kroom Tannery in Pyarnu, under the direction of Chief Engineer Kamya-
novakiy, changed the technological process utilized for treating sealskin and
worked out a nev method for preparing patent and chrome leather. This sealskin
will be used for producing footwear,
The experience of the Kroom Plant is new being utilized by the Uai~n
Leather Combine in Tallin which has begun manufacture of patent leather from
sealskin for haberdashery.{2)
