VOCATIONAL TRAINI_`'.ri IN SOVIET ZONE GERMANY
The program for vocatio-al training during the two-year plan. contained
the following requirements.,
1. All. boys and girls leaving the lower schools must enter vocational
schools.
2. By 1950, 725,0('0 vocational students must be receiving an average
of 10 hours of instruction per week.
This means that during 194Q and 1950, 150 new trade schools were to be
opened, and 440 new factory trade schools were to be founded by 31 December
1949. Agricultural trade schools are also to be opened in every Machine Ren-
tal Station.
In 1949, out of 805,000 students subject to compulsory attendance at vo-
cational schools in the German Democratic Republic, 750,000 or 94 percent,
were receiving vocational training. The greatest relative increase in voca-
tional school enrollment has been in Mecklenburg. Between 1935 and 1938 the
number-of vocational students increased only from 1.0,000 to 15,000, or 50 per-
cent, whereas between 1945 and 1.949 there was an increase of 100,000 students,
or 1,000 percent.
All students leaving the lower schools are now being enrolled in vocational
schools.
The factory trade schools have shown the greatest increase, from 13,000
students in 1948 to 60,000 in 1949, However, this figure is still less than 10
percent of the number attending public trade schools. By 1 September 1950, the
number at such schools should be increased to 120,000.
