2. Background. In a note on the Morning Summary of
23 November you as ed for a run down on Soviet tanks. The
information requested is attached. The export information
is derived from DIA documents and is concurred in by OER. It
reflects direct exports by the USSR. Because of losses and
subsequent transfers, the export data may not relate to current

Export totals by country from DIA, DDI-1940-1A-77, "Foreign Military Assistance,
October 1977" and OER. The figures represent total exports including both newly
produced and used or refurbished tanks.
OSR believes that the DIA estimate of about 15,000 T-54, 55 and 62 exports is
several thousand too low (possibly because losses in Vietnam and the Mideast
have been underestimated). The estimated total production for T-54/55 and
T-62 is more than 64,000 tanks., The current Soviet inventory for those tanks
is estimated to be less than 40,000 leaving nearly 24,000 for export or the
scrap heap,
