ELECTRICAL WORKERS LAUNCH METAL-SAVING DRIVE
DIE MAKES 11 MILLION CUTTINGS -- Pravda Ukrainy, No 93, 19 Apr 50
The stamping shop at the Leningrad Elektrosila Plant imeni S. N. Kirov
is using a new die. It has already lade 500,000 cuttings, and is expected
to make a million more before it wears out.
Usually, the tool-steel plates have been fastened to the die bed by
their plane surface. The height of their cutting portion has been no more
than 15 millimeters, and after 250,000-300,000 cuttings, they have been com-
pletely worn out..
The plant has now had an expensive tool made, production of which re-
quires 1- tons of metal. A group of engineers under the leadership of the
chief technologist, by changing the design of the die, have made it possible
to secure the plates of tool steel to the die bed by their edges instead of
by their plane surface. Their cutting portion has thus been increased to a
height of 45 millimeters. This more than triples the length of service of
a huge die which cuts metal with a diameter up to one meter for electrical
machinery. The new method not only prolongs the life of the tool, but algo
insures great savings in metal.
UKRAINIAN PLANT WILL SAVE MILLION RUBLES -- Pravda Ukrainy, No 97, 23 Apr 50
Engineering- and technical workers at the Konotop Krasnyy Metallist
Plant have started a movement for keeping personal records of money saved as
a result of innovations. They have planned to save 1 million rubles.
Plant designers, in collaboration with technologists and stakhanovites,
have effected great savings In the production of a new ventilator, an elec-
tric drill, and other electrical machinery.

A new design is being worked out for a magnetic starter which will save
200,000 rubles per year. A profit of 300,000 rubles per year will be realized
by the use of ferrous instead of nonferrous metal in certain machine parts.
Improvement in the design of the VM-300 ventilator will save 50,000 rubles.
Designers have resolved to cut down variety of types, as well as brands
of materials and metal shapes, to provide additional savings. They are striv-
ing to reduce production expenses, improve the quality of machines, increase
output, and reduce costs.
LITHUANIAN MOTOR PLANT TO LOWER PRODUCTION COSTS -- Sovetskaya Litva, No 97,
23 Apr 50
In honor of the tenth anniversary of Soviet Lithuania, the El'fa Motor-
Building Plant has pledged to fulfill its 8-month plan in the output of Ural
and APM-2 motors by 21 July, and to complete its 7-month program by the same
date. It has determined to lower production cost of the Ural motor 5percent,
and of the APM-2 motor, 25 percent, in comparison with their cost during the
first quarter of 1950. it plans to save 20,000 rubles worth of materials.
CABLE PLANT SAVES LEAD AND COPPER -- Leningradskaya Pravda, No 98, 25 Apr 50
The Leningrad Sevkabel' Plant of the Ministry of the Electrical Industry
is putting on an economy drive to save copper, lead, and other materials. A
more efficient method of encasing cable with lead has saved about 70 kilograms
of lead per day. During the past 3 months, 2 tons of scarce raw material have
been saved. This will make it possible to put out cable of average size with
lead sheathing up to 6 kilometers in length.
Enamelers at the plant are effecting considerable savings in copper.
Workers throughout the enterprise are joining the campaign to save nonferrous
metals and other materials.
MAKE TRANSFORMERS FROM SALVAGED MATERIAL -- Pravda Vostoka, No 96, 25 Apr 50
The transformer shop of the Elektroshchit Plant has pledged to make a
welding apparatus, a power transformer, and 30 boiler transformers (kotel'nyy
transformator) from salvaged materials. The machine shop plans to produce
eight sets of mountings and parts for welding apparatus, four sets of power
transformers, and four sets of small transformers from materials saved.
ARTEL WILL PRODUCE 10,000 MOTORS IN 1950 -- Vechernyaya Moskva, No 97, 24 Apr 50
Testing began today on the first group of low-duty electric engines at the
industrial artel known as the Second Machinery Plant. This year the enterprise
faces a considerable task. It is to produce 10,000 motors with capacities of
0.62, 2.2, and 3.2 kilowatts. The first 50 have already been assembled.
New equipment has been installed in the shops of the artel: powerful
presses, machine tools for metal cutting, and testing stands. Workers have
promised to assemble 600 motors in May.
