(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) Coastal Defenses South of the Gulf of Varna - June 1952 1. The sketch on page 2 shows coastal defenses already constructed or under construc- tion on the south bank of the Gulf of Varna. The first line of trenches is about 100 meters from the coast, and the second line is about 300 meters inland. 2. A new road has been built to avoid passing through the fortified zone. 3? The two small quays accommodate only the landing of personnel and materiel. The water is too shallow-to permit access to heavy transport ships, especially the quay at Galata point, which is at the foot of a cliff 50 to 80 meters high. 4. The following is the legend for the sketch on page 2: 1. Trenches completed in 1952. 2. Barbed wire entanglement 2.50 meters high. 3. (x) Sentries. b. Old road. 5. New roads, 10 meters wide. Lake Muzh (not to be confused with Lake Shabla which is smaller and farther south), located northeast of Shabla (N 143-32, E 28-31), has been connected with the sea. The passage and the lake have sand bottoms and have been dredged to permit access to warships.. of medium tonnage. A quay 500 meters long has been constructed at the northern extremity of-.the lake, and behind this is a fuel reservoir. A dock and a ship repair yard have been fitted out at the southern extremity of the lake. An observation post equipped with three 300 mm. guns on concrete platforms has been installed on the heights at Cape Kaliakra. 9. The following have been constructed at Kavarna Bay, to the south of Boliyartsis a. A breakwater; b. A quay 500 meters long; c. A coal depot; d. Two fuel reservoirs; e. One electric pumping station; f. A barracks; and g. A command post. 10. Two breakwaters have been constructed to the southeast and southwest of Balchik. 11. A jetty about 1,000 meters long which serves to better shelter the old port of Balchik has been constructed as follows: Burgas - Early June 1953 13. On 28 May 1953, the Bulgarian ship GEORGI DIMITROV arrived at Burgas, loaded with cotton, tractors, and machinery parts. It had probably come from Odessa. 14. At about the same date, the motor cargo ship 9 SEPTEMVRI brought in trucks from 15. Odessa. The number of trucks brought in since the end of April 1953 by ship to the port of Burgas is estimated at 122. 16. From 11 to 15 June 1953, a Soviet ship loaded about 2,000 tons of ores. These ores were in the form of a rather heavy gray powder. Varna - Early June 1953 17. The following sketch shows the general lines of the TEREK. It is added that the ship is identical with the 9 SEPTEMVRI. , Bridge Warship quay at Evksinograd - Early 1952 18. A warships'quay about 500 meters long has been constructed between Sveti Dimitur Cape and the former palace of Evksinograd. The quay is protected on the east by a breakwater 120 meters long. Other installations include: a. A headquarters building; b. A barracks; c. An arsenal for the construction of sea mines and sea mine launchers; and d. An observation post 33 meters high on a hill to the north-northeast. 19. The base commander is Captain I Class Doychinov. A basin 500 meters long and 1100 meters wide has been hollowed out at Obzor (N 112-48, E 27-52), at the delta of the Ayvadzhik River (or Chiste-Dere), to serve as a hydroplane base. The basin is protected on the sea side by two breakwaters between which is a passage 80 to 100 meters wide. The work was begun in 1950 and completed in early 1952 (sic). 23. No new buildings have been constructed for the headquarters, offices, depots, and workshops. Several buildings of the small village, formerly a very popular sea resort, were requisitioned for these purposes. 1 11 211. The base commander is. Captain II Class Trifon Lazarov. 25.
