Fifty-one univernities and technical schools with a total of, 109
faculties are available to foreizn students, offering 40 different
degree.

All persons coming to Czechoslovakia from abroad to attend
a university course ms undergraduates or as postgraduates are
bound to tubsit their applications for admission to the Univer-
sity of 17th hMwesber which enrolls them at its own faculties or
assign, them to the faculties of other institutions of higher
education (University, Technical University, Art Schooll.
The University of 17th November, named to commemorate the
International Sindents Oay, baa been founded to ensure higher
education to foreign students, irrespective of their race, natio-,
nality, colour or religion
There are 51 Universities and Technical Universities with
a total of 109 faculties in Czechoslovakia at the present time.
Specialists ley be trained in the following fields of study [the

Tuition in the teachers' courses at the Faculties of Natu-
ral and technical Sciences and of Social Sciences will be nreva-
lently given in French and English [Spanish is being considered),
according to the pos;ibilities of the individual faculties hnd
the number of students enrolled.
, Tuition in the field of social sciences will be given exclu-
sively in these languages. Lectures in the French langusge,com-
menced in 1962/1963rwi1l be extended by lectures in English in
1963/1964, providing ? sufficient number of students is enrolled.
Courses of study at the Faculties of the University of 17th
November are based on syllabuses which are adapted to the needs
of the developing countries end, their requirements as to the ge-
neral background of specielists with a university training.The
only subjects not included in the syllabuses are those which have
no *ortence with a view to the needs'of.the developing countries
and those which would reduce the applicability of the course by
too narrow a specialisation.
On corpletion of his studies, the foreign student will re-
ceive a diploma conferring upon bin the respective academic de-
.gree (Master, Bachelor of Vedicine and Bachelor of Surgery,etc.1.

Inasfar as. prospective undergraduates are not directly en-
rolled in .a course of study where tuition is given in one of the
foreign languages indicated above, at one of the faculties of
the University of 17th November, they will be enrolled at the
Preparatory Faculty of the University in order to attain a wor-
king knowledge of the Czech (or Slovekl language and, if neces-
sary, to supplement or extend their knowledge of the respective
subjects at the secondary-school level so that they may be
brought up to the standard of proficiency required by the depart-
ments of universities here they intend to study. Ibis regards
in particular proficiency in suchsubjects as mathematics,rhemistry
and physics. This one-year course of study is also intended to
enable the foreign student to get gradually used to the ways oi
Life and conditions in Czechoslovakia.A similar preparatory course,
of a shorter duration,is also available to post-graduate students.
On completing the preparatory course,the students it for examine-
time in the Czech Lor Slovakl Language and in the specialized
subjects. The certificate granted them on passing these examina-
tions is reouired for their enrollment at the faculty where they
intend to study.
Applicants, men or women aged from 17 to 30, may apply for
enrollment to study in Czechoalovakia,provided that they have
completed their secondary school education and are entitled to
study at an establishment of higher education li.e.they have,for
instance, passed their First and Second parts of the Eaccalauriat
or have been awarded the General Certificate of Education or so-

Applications should contain all necessary personal data
and data concerning employment,if any,educetion, knowledge of
languages, public and community activities. Anplicetions have to
he sent in together with an autobiography, attested copies of all
documents (certificate of secondary school education,birth cer-
tificate, etc. J, a medical certificate, which clearly specifies
that the applicant's state of health is such as to enable him to
study at the university, end with two photographs, hearing the
applicant's signature Islways also one in Latin characters( on
the beck. The requisite forms of application will be sent to the
applicant on request, either by the Czechoslovak representatives
in the applicant's country or by the University itself. Persons
suffering from any severe disease or physical deformities which
might be an impedinent to their studies at a higher educational
establishment cannot be enrolled.
The courses of study chosen oy the applicant should be
clearly stated in the application in 1 sequence giving his ore-
fe4nce; it should be further stated whether the student intends
to cover the expenses of his studies himseff.or apply for a Cze-
choslovsk scholarship. If the latterAis'the case, the financial
conditions of his family and serious grounds motivating his
application for a scholarship should be given.
Postgraduate students sent in an analogowl application
end they are requested to attach an attested copy of the certifi-
cates and diatom's issued to them by an establishment of higher
education, recommendations of specialists or research instituti-
ons, if Lay, and a list of scientific papers published so far.

In addition, they shall also include a confirmation as to the

' Applicants shall send their applications to the University

the respective Czechoslovak representatives abroad or of inter-
national orgenitatiOns. The applibation shall be sent in by 30th
April at the latest, when they will be sumbitted to the Universi-
ty Council dealing with admissions. On that date the list will
be closed and no guarantee con be given that applications coming
tin ester this date will be considered for the coming school year.
The University Council considers each application and draws up
s list of applications for the individual.eourses of study.Admis-
sion will be determined according to the number of vacancies and
scholarships available.

be shrilled of the period of time when they will be expected to

all correspondence as well as the information of their having

Tuition at all universities and technical or other colleges-
as in all other Czechoslovak educational establishments is free
of charge. This gigglel also to foreign students. So is medical
care (including medicmmts prescribed by the doctor, treatment
In hospitals, sanatoria or other. medical institutionsl. All fo-
reign students are entitled to receive lodgings in the student
hostels of the university to which they are attached, at a very
law rate. Students ray take their meals in student canteens, whe-
re meals are subsidized to the price of 2,60 Ce. crowns for a
e4dday or an evening meal'. Like other students, stedents from
abroad also can make use of a reduced-rate season-ticket in the
suns of local transport and in certain cases are also entitled
to a reduction of 16 to 50 per cent on,railway travel. Students,
who in the first year of their stay in Czechoslovakia study at
the. Praneratory Faculty, which is orgsnized on a boarding-school
system, receive full accommodation, services and board [four to
five seals a dayl.
Ihe Czschoslovsk scholarship for Lhiversity studies granted
through !amnion eovermpente or internstionil.urgsnizations by
Ctecbosiovek establishes:rite or institutions as well as the scho-
larship granted by the University of 17th November smoonts to
700 Cs. crowns per math and is paid out every month. In addition
to this, smsdents.receive a grant of 400 crowns year for aids
and hOoks and are provided with ? clothing grant of 500 crowns
twice during anis coarse of study.
A post-vedette's scholarship is higher. 1100 to 1600 crowns
(subject to a tap dedectionl. The mount of the scholarship
grant, .14.firl the tem deduction, depends on the post-graduste

Czechoslovak currency not being transferable, the student
cannot expect to be able to remit any amounts of money" to his
home country.
Finally, students should take into acount that they are
lodged in the student hostels two to five to a room; post-gradua-
,tes, two to a room, at best. It is not at present possible to
lodge students in single-rooms.
All students should have warm clothes learn underwear,jer-
seys, coats, gloves, mackintoshes, boots, a warm caul j: their
wardrobe. Students intending to study at any of the art schools ,.
should bring with them the instrument -they. need for their cour-
se of study, if portable (camera, unless.they are
prepared to provide it in this country from th7eir own means.
