1. In 1977, a project was begun to upgrade both the
operational and the personnel safety and health environ-
ments in the Printing and Photography Building. The require-
ments for this undertaking came from two directions. The
operational requirements wore a result of increased customer
demand for the use of color presentations. These demands
resulted in the addition of more modern processing equipment
as well as in the need to install the equipment in new
locations to gain maximum production efficiency.
2. The requirements for occupational safety were the
result of an industrial hygiene survey accomplished throuprh

mendations to improve the overall ventilation in the building
were more extensive and could be best implemented in concert
with the operational renovations which also involved significant
ventilation system alterations.

5. The original requirements for alterations have not
changed during the past three years that the GSA has been
working on the project. However, the planned cost of the
project has inflated significantly, increasing from the
325,000 range in 1977 to a firm 1981 cost of $595,000 includ-
ing the various costs for design, construction, and contract
administration.
6. It is requested that additional FY 77 funds in the
