Annaberg,
1. Juring the second half of flarch 1951, no changes were observed with the
IND personnel located in installations in the Annaberg 51/K 73) area.
Several Soviet soldiers said that the IND troops in this area were under
the command of Colonel norotkovski, (fnu), whose deputy was Captain Putyan,
(fnu). The nim troops in the Annaberg area were allegedly subordinate to
a general in Chemnitz. (1)
2. A memorial ceremony at the Annaberg cemetery in late February was attended
by two majors, 26 company-grade officers, and abOut 1100 soldiers. Of the
EM, 160 wore red-bordered green epaulets and red-bordered black epaulets and
carried 80 wreaths; 50 wore red-bordered?green epaulets and carried rifles;
while the remaining 900 troops, mostly wore red-bordered green epaulets and
red-bordered black epaulets and some blue epaulets. (2)
3. The nehnert Factory quartered about 400 troops Who wore red-bordered green
epaulets. The unit furnished five officers and about 40 la for guard duty
at an explosives dump 2.5 km northeast of Annaberg. (3)
4. The barracks installation on Leninstrasse was occupied by about 350 troops
wearing red-bordered green epaulets who were detached to guard duty at nearby pits
of the :dsmut Corporation. The billeting area was guarded by sentries and 15
dogs. Other dogs were kept in the kennel. A craftsman employed at the installa-
tion said that clothing and equipment of the troops were good, but the food was
bad. The troops were restricted to quarters and could leave only when on duty
and accompanied by officers. From 70 to 80 sol-iers were seen daily leaving the
installation for firing and close-combat pracice. (3)
5. The 1113 office on 3aerensteiner Strasse was guarded by elentries who wore red-
bordered green epaulets. A supply depot of the ..istut 73orporation was located
on the premises of the former Altmann Factory on the same street. (4)

6. In mid-Ilarch, one IND officer Buraviov, (fnu), belon4ed to the
staff of the Soviet komendantura in Bitterfeld (1! 52/E 14). The
officer was allegedly detached from the komendantura in Kaumburg
and witnessed interrogations of persons arrested.

7. In mid-ilarch, the Artillerie Kaserne in Chemnitz (N 51/Y 66) was
occupied exclusively by a unit whose personnel wore red-bordered
green epaulets. This was confirmed by a coal dealer who estinated
the unit at about 500 men. No heavy weapons were observed. About
120 soldiers with red-bordered green epaulets were seen drilling 50X1-HUM
one day and 80 soldiers with red-bordered [Teen epaulets practicirC
together with troops who wore red-bordered black epaulets on another

8. The administrative office of the Tiismut Corporation in Siegmar-
f;choenau, vest of Chemnitz, was staffed iv 35 officers, including
three field-grade officers. All drivers seen at the office wore
red-bordered green epaulets. The :VD office on Zeisigvaldstrasse
seemed to be vacant. (6)

9. On 16. Larch, the personnel of the 77,n) office in Georgengartens
Dessau (:! 52/e ins:numbered 80 to 100 men, including 10 officers,
many NO0s, and about 50 percent recruits. All of them wore red-
boraored green epaulets. Two sedans and two trucks were assigned
to the office.
Dresden.

10. In mid-ilarch, the former Lufthriegsschule in Dresden (N 52A 29) -
Klotzsche quartered a .unit of troops wearing rod-bordered green
epaulets, which had 50 to 60 trained dogs. Three comanies of
the unit, each one having about five officers and 160 N, attended
the Rod Army Day ceremonies. All the soldiers were young and source
was of the opinion that they were well-trained and disciplined. Two

each were seen daily drilling intensively, weather notwithstanding.

In mid-March, the Becher Kaserne was occupied to capacity by a unit
of about 1,200 troops who wore red-bordered green epaulets. Training
activities, predominartIy firing practice in groups of up to 45 sol-
diers, were observed on four days. Motor vehicles observed in the

All vehicles were driven by soldiers wearing red-bordex50X1-HUM

Erfurt.
13. On 31 March, 60 to 70 soldiers who wore red-bordered green epaulets
worked in the MOB office in the Ursulinen Cloister, Erftrt (1.1 51/
I 36). Officers and EM of all branches of service except the air
force; Volkspolizei officers; and boviet and German civilians were
observed there. Motor vehicle was identified. The MU 50X1-HUM
quarters on Strasse der Einheit billeted 25 to 30 officers t families
and an undetermined number of EM who wore red-bordered green epaulets.
Goerlitz.
14. Troops wearing red-bordered green epaulets were observed in Goerlits
(0 52/B 00) on 18 March. Their quarters could not be determined.

The number of NVD troops in Annaberg, including those in the Frohnau
Kasernes is estimated at about 1,200 and approximately corresponds to
the number of MVD troops observed at the cerirbery. Troops veering red-
bordered black epaulets were seen in Annaberg as early as February 19510
