1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: ELEMENTS OF THE ETHIOPIAN 10TH DIVISION HAVE
DEPARTED FROM GARRISONS IN THE TOWN OF JIJIGA ON THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE
OGADEN REGION.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: A BATTALION OF 122MM HOWITZERS D-30 AND ELEMENTS OF A
TANK BATTALION WERE ABSENT FROM JIJIGA VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
FACILITY BOTH UNITS WERE PRESENT
UNITS STILL REMAINING WITHIN THIS INSTALLATION INCLUDED A BATTALION
OF 155MIM1 SELF-PROPELLED HOWITZERS M-109 AND A BATTERY OF 130MM FIELD GUNS
M-46. OTHER UNITS THAT DEPARTED THE JIJIGA AREA
INCLUDED A SECOND BATTALION OF 122MM HOWITZERS D-30 THAT HAD BEEN
DEPLOYED WEST OF TOWN AND AN INFANTRY BATTALION THAT HAD BEEN HOUSED IN A
BIV JITHIN JIJIGA ARMY BARRACKS NORTHWEST (PARTIALLY ON GRAPHIC
2). THIS BIVOUAC AREA CONSISTED OF APPROXIMATELY 175 TWO-MAN
AND 30 MEDIUM TENTS. BY LATE JULY THE MAJORITY OF THE TENTS IN THIS
BIVOUAC HAD BEEN STRUCK.
(S/D) THE PRESENT DISPOSITION OF THESE RECENTLY DEPARTED UNITS IS
UNKNOWN. THESE UNITS MAY HAVE DEPLOYED TO THE SOMALI BORDER IN RESPONSE
TO RECENT CLASHES BETWEEN MILITARY FORCES OF SOMALIA AND THE
ETHIOPIAN-BACKED INSURGENT FORCES OF THE SOMALI DEMOCRATIC SALVATION FRONT.
(S/D) NO UNUSUAL ACTIVITY WAS IDENTIFIED AT INSTALLATIONS IN THE JIJIGA
AREA WHICH HOUSE TWO CUBAN BRIGADES. THESE TWO BRIGADES, ONE ARMOR AND
ONE ARTILLERY. HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED NEAR JIJIGA SINCE MID-1978.
