NEW AIRFIELD UNDER CONSTRUCTION
BORDJ MOKTAR AIRFIELD, ALGERIA
1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: ANEW AIRFIELD WAS OBSERVED UNDER
CONSTRUCTION IN SOUTHERN ALGERIA NEAR THE MALI BORDER ON
IMAGERY
2. (SWN) REMARKS: BORDJ MOKTAR AIRFIELD WAS NEWLY IDENTIFIED
6 NM NORTHEAST OF THE ALGERIA-MALI BORDER AND 3 NM NORTH OF
BORDJ tdOKTAR. THE AIRFIELD, WHICH WAS NOT OPERATIONAL,
CONSISTS OF ONE EAST/WEST RUNWAY, 2,240-BY 48-METERS. THE
EAST END OF THE RUNWAY HAD BEEN SURFACED AND A SMALL TAXIWAY
HAD BEEN GRADED FROM THE MIDPOINT OF THE RUNWAY, SOUTH TO A
RECTANGULAR AIRCRAFT PARKING AREA. TRENCHING FOR AIRFIELD
UTILITIES WAS OBSERVED IMMEDIATELY SOUTH OF THE RUNWAY.
POSSIBLE FOOTINGS AND PILINGS, PROBABLY FOR AIRFIELD SUPPORT
FACILITIES, WERE ALSO OBSERVED.
