Two more tank turret positions and another hardened automatic weapons firing position were still under construction0 Ex- 25X1 cavations for the positions were seen . Four of the tank turrets for the firing 25X1 positions were camouflaged or environmentally covered. The hardened automatic weapons firing positions have a circular concrete interior which is covered, leaving two or three openings for firing ports. The positions are cable connected to each other for com- munications purposes. The tank turret positions and the automatic weapons positions are surrounded by two to four security fences with gate entrances at the rear. This is the first identification of tank turret construction adjacent to a military barracks and the first time that hardened automatic weapons firing positions have been in- corporated into the defensive plan. These positions are probably part of the continuing con- struction program to upgrade the defenses along this section of the Sino-Soviet Border. Since 1973 the Soviets have constructed a line of approximately 600 tank turret firing positions that extend along a 200-nautical mile (nm) front from Lake Zun-Torey (50-02-05N 115-58-30E) to Srednyaya Borzya (50-53-45N 119-28-41E) and is approximately 2 to 3 nm from the Sino-Soviet border. Nadarovskiy Army Barracks Bilituy AL-1 is 11 nm southeast of Dauriya and 8.5 nm north of the Sino-Soviet Border in the Transbaykal Military District. SREDNYAYA BORZYA 0.
