1. SIGNIFICANCE: JIANGHU FRIGATE (FF), UNIT 18, HAS BEEN LAUNCHED
(SWN ) 25X1
2. REMARKS: THE VESSEL IS BERTHED AT THE FITTING-OUT WHARF
INBOARD OF JIANGHU FF UNIT 17, WHICH HAS-JUST RETURNED FROM SEA
TRIALS. THE MAIN GUN POSITIONS ON UNIT 18 HAVE BEEN FITTED
WITH TWIN 57MM GUNS AS WAS UNIT 17. PREVIOUS JIANGHU FF HAVE
BEEN FITTED WITH A SINGLE OR TWIN 100MM GUN. AT LEAST FOUR OF
THE SIX 37MM ANTIAIRCRAFT GUNS HAVE ALSO BEEN INSTALLED;
HOWEVER, THE CSS-N-1 ANTISHIP CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCHERS AND THE
STACK HAVE NOT BEEN INSTALLED. RECENT GROUND PHOTOS REVEAL
THAT AN EXPORT PENDANT NUMBER (WITH A DESIGNATION FOR EXPORT TO
EGYPT) WAS ON THE BOW CF JIANGHU FF UNIT 17. SINCE UNIT 18 HAS
BEEN FITTED THE SAME AS UNIT 17, IT SUGGESTS THAT JIANGHU FF
UNIT 18, AS WELL AS UNIT 17, WILL PROBABLY BE EXPORTED. (SWN)
