This study of 14 military aircraft storage airfields in the USSR (Figure 1) is intended as an analytical aid for assessing the Soviet capability for rapid deployment of large numbers of aircraft required for a buildup or a crisis. The highest aircraft storage counts prior to 1 January 1968 are compared with the latest totals observed at these fields. This comparison provides a means of assessing aircraft logistics that were possibly related to political and military events of the past several years (Table 1). 2. The total of latest counts of military aircraft stored at-the 14 air- fields was 1095, of which 238 were BEAGLE bombers and 1,157 were fighters. These counts with one exception were derived from the latest or best 1970 KEYHOLE photography through April 1970 The counts by type of aircraft are as follows: Type of Aircraft Highest Count Prior to 1 Jan 68 Latest Count BEAGLE 349 238 FISHBED 35 FARMER 96 FAGOT/FRESCO 1,701 1,095 Total Aircraft 2,172 1,395 NORWAY'VN +ti 3 SC FINLAND QOt'`gND Kahn iwgfad~`,~^4` nuyoysnav?~ Sverdlov Astrakhanjw Guryev aku'' 1RA FIGURE 1.
