I 113 new impact craters, probably made by reentry vehicles from two separate SS-18 (Mod 2) ICBMs, were identified on Kamchatka Peninsula (Figure 1). This was the first identification of probable SS-18 reentry vehicle impact craters. 2. Seven of these craters were within Poluostrov Kamchatka Impact Area 1 Six of these seven (craters 1-5 and 7) were clustered within a 3.0-nautical-mile (nm) radius of 57-22-30N 161-43-OOE (Figure 2). An instrumentation tower was 2.5 nm east of these coordinates (Figure 1). Crater 6 (Figure 3) was 9.7 nm north of the cluster of six. Crater 8 (Figure 3) was 26.0 nm to the south-southwest, in Poluostrov Kamchatka Missile Impact Area 2 A second instrumentation tower was 0.7 nm west-northwest of crater 8 (Figure 1). Crater 9 (Figure 4) was 19.5 nm northwest of the cluster of six. A third instrumentation tower (not shown in Figure 1) was 4.9 nm west of crater 9. Crater 10 (Figure 4) was 12.5 nm northeast of the cluster of six; crater 11 (Figure 4) was 14.5 nm to the southeast; crater 12 (Figure 4) was 18.0 nm to the southeast; and crater 13 (Figure 5) was 24.0 nm to the south-southwest. 3. Five aircraft were observed in the area of the impact craters (Figure 1). A HIP C helicopter was parked 250 feet east of crater 4 (Figure 5). A HOUND helicopter was parked 1,000 feet west of crater 9. Three COLT light-transport aircraft were observed in flight within the impact area. One was 3.1 nm north-northwest of the cluster of six craters; one was within 2 nm south of crater 12; another was within 1 nm northeast of crater 13. SS-18 (Mod 2) ICBM was fired from the Tyuratam Missile/Space Test Center SSM (BE to Kamchatka at about 2350Z.1 The time of the photography on was 0120Z. Another SS-18 (Mod 2) ICBM was fired from Tyuratam to Kamchatka at 0230Z.2 5. Locations and dimensions of the craters are shown in Table 1. Ranges and azimuths are measured from the instrumentation tower at 57-23-13N 161-47-36E. 6.
