MILITARY/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS, SUS-SAHARAN AFRICA,
APRIL -JUNE 1975
1. This report summarizes developments in six selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa observed
Data is included on Somalia, Uganda, Guinea, Ethiopia,
Equatorial Guinea, and Burundi (Figure 1 and Table 1).
2. A STYX (SS-N-2) missile shipping container was seen in Somalia for the first time on
photography
at Berbera Port Facilities (Figure 2). It was at one end of a newly
completed building in the partially secured support area east of the main mole.
a STYX missile shipping container was alongside the same building.
3. Soviet naval combatants and auxiliaries were at Berbera on four separate dates during the
mission. A FOXTROT SS, a Kanin DDG, and an Alligator LST were present ~ a Krivak
DDGSP and an Akademik Krylov AGOR were there on 1. June. The Akademik Krylov AGOR was
7..5 nautical miles (nm) west of the harbor. A listing of major vessels observed on this mission at
Berbera Port Facilities is included in the table on Figure 2.

5. Berbera Missile Handling and Storage Facility was in the late stages of construction (Figure
3). The facility, 2 nm southwest of Berbera Port Facilities, has been completely fenced. Other changes
since the previous reports include the completion of two sheds previously under construction, fencing
of the two southwesternmost sheds, and the appearance of short trenches leading from two sheds,
all in the missile handling and fueling area. Outside the northeast corner of this area is a small concrete
pad with two small horizontal storage tanks on supports. On the south side of the checkout/assembly
and storage area two large horizontal storage tanks were in an excavation in front of the multistory
support building. These were in the process of being earth covered. The road network in all three
areas, as well as the connecting main road, has been completed.
6. Construction 4 nm southwest of Berbera Port Facilities has been identified as an airfield
under construction and has been designated Berbera Airfield New (Figure 4). This airfield consists
of a 14,800- by 1,725-foot cleared area for a runway with a narrower 2,530-foot extension on the
southwest end. Initial surfacing of the runway was in progress and was approximately 2,800 by 170
feet. A second cleared strip' that parallels the runway was 16,150 by 350 feet.Da support
area under construction between the parallel areas contained seven partially completed buildings and
nine small horizontal storage tanks lying on the ground.
7. Daraweina Ammunition Storage Facility is 14 nm northwest of Hargeisa and 1 nm
west-southwest of Daraweina (Figure 5). It previously was reported as an unidentified storage facility.
Apparently complete, this double-fence-secured facility includes four approximately 110- by 45-foot
bunkers, each with an entrance at both ends and adrive-by and a blast wall at one end. The entra~sce
at the end with the blast wall Shadow prevented
measurement of the other entrance. One approximately 235-foot, bi-wing building and 11 additional
support buildings were scattered throughout the facility. Since the previous report, security for the
area was strengthened by the addition of guard towers at the four corners of the inner security
fence.
