(TSR) As permitted by terms of the SALT interim agreement, 20 former SS-7 ICBM launch sites in the USSR have been converted to alternate uses. Some sites continue to serve the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces while others have no connection with strategic forces. Of the 20 dis- mantled launch sites covered in this report, six now support mobile IRBM bases, seven have been converted to army barracks, and three are used as vehicle storage areas. The remaining four dis- mantled launch sites are-or appear to be-functioning in a variety of capacities (Table 1). 2. (TSR) The construction of SS-20 mobile IRBM bases at or near dismantled SS-7 ICBM launch sites was first identified in November 1976. To date, three bases have been identified at the Drovyanaya ICBM Complex, two at Novosibirsk ICBM Complex in the eastern USSR, and one in the very early stages of construction at Verkhnyaya Salda ICBM Complex in the central USSR. 3. (TSR) Of the seven SS-7 ICBM sites converted to army barracks, four are at Yedrovo ICBM Complex in the Leningrad Military District and three are at the Itatka ICBM Complex (Figure 1) in the Siberian Military District. These barracks areas now house Soviet ground combat units. 4. (TSR) The new functions of the remaining launch sites include an air warning radar site at Gladkaya (Figure 2) vehicle 25X1 storage areas at Svobodnyy, and a facility possibly associated with agriculture or animal husbandry at Teykovo.
