Top Secret NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION CENTER Summary Report PROBABLE EXPANSION OF BULGARIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENSE SIGNAL REGIMENT (TSR) Top Secret SR-067/78 SEPTEMBER 1978 Copy 13 3 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/03/29: CIA-RDP78B07179A000100320001-3 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/03/29: CIA-RDP78B07179A000100320001-3 Top Secret RUFF PROBABLE EXPANSION OF BULGARIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENSE SIGNAL REGIMENT (TSR) (TSR) Construction activity and an increase in the number of vehicles and pieces of equipment indicate that the Ministry of Defense Signal Regiment housed at Gorna Malina Army Barracks 001 in Bulgaria may be expanding to a signal brigade. (TSR) Construction activity at the barracks was first observed on hen a multistory administration building was under construction. It is estimated that all of the construction will be completed by the summer of 1979. At that time, the total undercover vehicle storage capacity will be approximately 520 vehicles. (TSR) On imagery o separately secured possible headquarters area was under construction 1.3 nautical miles northwest of the barracks. Construction included three multistory barracks/administration buildings, which appeared to be externally complete on This area and the barracks are connected by possible cable trenches. (TSR) The first increase in the number of pieces of equipment, indicating that the regiment at the barracks may be expanding to a signal brigade, was observed on imagery of when four R-410 (TWIN PLATE) troposcatter sets were observed. Thirty-six R-400/- 404 and 89 electronics vans were also observed. (TSR) On major elements of two radio-relay battalions and a troposcatter battalion were observed. Communications equipment observed included at least four TWIN PLATE sets, two R-409 (CATS PAW), 12 R-102, five R-118BM3, fourP-299M communication centers, 69 R-400/-404-associated vans, and at least 20 other electronics vans.
