AFGHANISTAN 1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: ANEW AIRFIELD, CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING FIXED-WING IRC T, IS IDENTIFIED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN EASTERN AFGHANISTAN. 2. (S/D) REMARKS: BAND-E SARDEH DAM AIRFIELD IS 17 NM SOUTHEAST OF GHAZNI~'I~33-19-17N 068-38-08E. THE PROBABLE GRADED-EARTH RUNWAY IS ONLY PARTIALLY CLEARED OF SNOW. THE RUNWAY APPEARS TO BE AT LEAST 1,880 METERS LONG, 40 METERS WIDE, AND HAS AN AZIMUTH OF APPROXIMATELY 170/350 DEGREES. NO AIRFIELD SUPPORT FACILITIES ARE OBSERVED. AN AFGHAN TANK BATTALION AND AN AFGHAN MOTORIZED RIFLE BATTALION ARE ALSO IDENTIFIED HERE FOR IS ALSO AT THE BIVOUAC. BAND-E SARDEH DAM AIRFIELD IS APPROXIMATELY 70 NM FROM THE PAKISTAN BORDER. THE FIRST TIME, IN BIVOUAC, ~4PPROXIMATELY 800 METERS SOUTH OF THE RUNWAY. AN AFGHAN ARTILLERY BATTALION, OBSERVED HERE 3.
