This was the first identification of the Soviets' latest artillery- associated target acquisition radar deployed with artillery in the Soviet Union. A BIG FRED radar was collocated with a BMP (armored amphibious tracked vehicle) variant M-1975 (SMALL FRED) in each of the four artillery regiments in the artillery division. The artillery regiments were composed of either 130mm M-46 or 152mm D-20 field artillery pieces. (S/WNINTEL) Only one PORK TROUGH battlefield surveillance radar was seen in the artillery division and no SMALI, YAWN counter-mortar/counter-battery radars were observed. Two PORK TROUGH and two SMALL YAWN radars are usually observed in the target acquisition battalion of the artillery division.* The apparent replacement of these radars with four BIG FRED and four. SMALL FRED, deployed down to the artillery regi- ment level, represents an upgrading of the division's target acquisition capabilities. (S/WNINTEL) The BIG FRED was first observed in 1975 at Werder Army Barracks and Headquarters Artillery Brigade 261 and at Bernau Barracks/Head- 25X1 quarters Artillery Brigade 244 Both garrisons are 2525X1 and are composed of 130mm M-46 and 152mm D-20 field artillery 25X1 pieces. (S) Ussuriysk is in the Far East Military District, 30 nautical mile east of the USSR- China Border.
