This resulted in a forward positioning of these units to 25X1 within 10 nm of the Sino-Soviet border from a rear support area approximately 50 nm from the border. (S/WNINTEL) Between two BTR-40-equipped, second- 25X1 generation motorized rifle regiments and an engineer battalion housed at Smolyaninovo Army Barracks AL-1/TA-3 began to redeploy 5 nm northwest to Shkotovo AL-1. Most of the equipment for these units had been transferred by This relocation consoli- 25X1 dated all elements of the second-generation motorized rifle division at Shkotovo AL-1. (S/WNINTEL) The forward deployment of the motorized rifle regiment of the active Smolyaninovo Division placed a frontline unit in the Tung-Ning-Pokrovka Gap, one of the two major avenues of advance into the Ussuriysk/Vladivostok area. The consolidation of the Sergeyevka Division improved the defenses of the second approach route through the Sui-Fen-Ho-Pogranichnyy area and simplified the command and control for the division redeployed to Lipovtsy Army Barracks Southwest AL-1. 70 FORCE REALIGNMENT IN SOVIET 5TH ARMY, FAR EAST MILITARY DISTRICT, USSR (S) (S/WNINTEL) During the period a force realignment was 25X1 observed within the Soviet 5th Army in the Far East Military District, USSR. This re- alignment (Figure 1) resulted in the following: the forward deployment of a major combat maneuver unit of the Smolyaninovo Division to an installation 10 nautical miles (nm) from the Sino-Soviet border; a consolidation of artillery, rocket, and chemical units with the combat manuever units of the Sergeyevka Division; and the consolidation of all elements of a second-generation (mobilization) division at Shkotovo Army Barracks AL-1. (S/WNINTEL) The artillery regiment and the multiple-rocket launcher battalion sub- ordinate to the Sergeyevka Division had been housed at Chernyatino Army Barracks AL- 1/TA-1. These units had left garrison by and were probably redeployed to 25X1 Barano-Orenburgskoye Army Barracks AL-1. This approximately 25-nm move consoli- dated the artillery and rocket force units of the Sergeyevka Division with its combat maneuver elements in the Barano-Orenburgskoye area. The chemical defense battalion housed at Chernyatino AL-1/TA-1 had also left garrison by and was probably 25X1 WARNING NOTICE Intelligence Sources and Methods Involved Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/05/20: CIA-RDP79T01819A000100030001-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/05/20: CIA-RDP79T01819A000100030001-1 by placing all of the units of the division within a 20-nm area.
