STYX COASTAL-DEFENSE MISSILE SYSTEMS IDENTIFIED IN
NORTH KOREA
STYX (CSSC-2) coastal-defense (CD) cruise-missile (CM) equipment was re- 25X1
cently identified for the first time at three locations in North Korea. The initial identifica-
tion was on the east coast at Okpyong-ni Military Installation North on 25X1
Subsequently, STYX CD CM equipment was identified at two 25X1
additional locations, botfi on the west coast. Pipa-got STYX CD CM Support rainin
Facility 38-32-25N 125-01-38E was identified on coverage 25X1
and Cho-do CD Site CM TSR 38-31-ION 124-51-OOE) was identified on 25X1
25X1
Battalion-s.zed elements were observed at both Okpyong-ni and Pipa-got. At 25X1
Okpyong-n , four STYX launchers, eight missile transporters, a possible STYX 25X1
crate transporter, nine STYX crates, four Berliet prime movers, and numerous other
pieces of support equipment and trucks were observed. a missile 25X1
handling exercise was underwa involving one of the missile transporters, a mobile crane,
and a STYX missile (Figure 1) at Pipa-got, four STYX launchers, 25X1
three STYX missile crates. and a roximatel 20 pieces of support equipment and trucks
were observed (Figure 2) the STYX launchers were not present; 25X1
however, there were 11 STYX crates, eight Berliet trucks, and approximately 15 pieces of
support equipment/trucks. An out-bound, possible STYX crate transporter towed by a
Berliet prime mover was on the road leading into the facility.
at Cho-do, two probable STYX missile 25X1
transporters and nine crates (Figure 3) were seen. The facility at Cho-do has underground
storage (four adits and two bunkers) and what appears to be two square concrete launch
pads.
The STYX CD CM system, which is of Chinese origin, will probably replace 25X1
the aging Soviet-provided SAMLET coastal-defense cruise-missile system. The new STYX
battalions are in the proximity of SAMLET launch facilities.
