AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING ACTIVITY, EAST SEA FLEET, PRC (S)
1. (S On imagery of amphibious-related training 25X12
activity was observed northwest of Zhoushan (Chou-shan) Island in the People's Republic of
China (PRC; Figure 1).
2. (S/WNINTEL) Nine amphibious-related ships were involved. Four EX-US tank landing
ships (LST)-1 were It nautical miles (nm) northwest of Zhoushan Island and were changing course
to the northwest (Figure 2A). Four EX-US medium landing ships (LSM)-l were heading north
after having passed between Zhoushan and Changbai (Chang-Pai) Islands with a fifth LSM 2 nm
west of the others and on the same course (Figure 2B).
3. (S/WNINTEL) Three additional ESF amphibious assault landing ships (three LSTs in-
cluding the one operational Yukan-class LST) were observed in port at Shanghai on
The ships included in the activity and the vessels in port account for 12 of the 14 amphibious
assault ships carried in the ESF order-of-battle.
4. (S/WNINTEL) The exact nature of the training activity could not be determined, and no
amphibious operations area was identified on imagery.
